It suddenly occurs to me, that maybe the advice is OK, we're just not the target audience. If Crazy Joe's wife shoots through the door, or others that are part of this administration, they won't be in any trouble as the law that applies to us mundanes doesn't apply to them. Maybe he just forgot who he was talking to.

I know Crazy Joe's intentions were misguided and I don't agree with his agenda but the advice is good, I think, at least to the extent of shooting someone through the door who is actively trying to break into your home goes. Regardless of what you use.

I had an opportunity to talk to at the time Assist. Sheriff Kenneth Craig Brady of FT.Bend county when we had a rash of burglaries in our neighborhood.

He said if someone was trying to breakin it was legal to shoot them through the door, you didnt have to wait until he got in and put yourself at risk.

If those who are just getting onboard with the whole guns and freedom movement invest in shotguns for HD then good but I hope they dont buy the Crazy Joe and O arguments against AR's and AK's. Everyone needs (Freedom rifle) one now more than ever.

But if the demand/price of freedom rifles was offset the demand for shotguns then I'd be the first to take advantage of that.

Exactly. If you can't SEE the target, you have no idea who you are shooting at, because no matter how much you THINK you know, you DON'T know until the door opens. What if a cop had stepped up to the door to neutralize the bad guy just as you pulled the trigger, and you didn't know because you can't see him there?

The battering at the door, and incoherent yelling, is the marginally disabled Down's Syndrome teenager from next door trying to let you know your house is on fire.

Vice President Joe Biden told Field & Stream magazine in an interview published Monday, “[if] you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door.”

Coincidentally, a 22-year-old man in Virginia Beach, Va., was charged Monday with reckless handling of a firearm...


...TV station WAVY 10 reports that the man observed two masked men leaning into his bedroom window. The men allegedly had weapons and told him to close his bedroom door. He stepped outside of his bedroom and did as instructed, then fired his shotgun through the closed door and then several more times at the window.

According to the news report there were no injuries and the suspects were not apprehended by police.

We have several smoke detectors tied to our security system, we should get a heads up way sooner.

Someone battering ( not just knocking or ringing the bell) at my door ( especially at strange times and at my backdoor)will always get treated as a BG ( assuming there is no smoke or fire present or they are not yelling "fire" and Im not expecting anyone).

Did you read every post or did you just get to the part you liked and replied. I think you might have missed somethings in between.

I did read every post, and as a former fireman I can assure you that smoke detectors (is it just SMOKE detectors, or do you have a proper mix of smoke, fire, and rate of rise detectors?) can and do fail (plus possibly the fire is on the outside of the house which is not usually protected by smoke detectors), "should" being the operative term, leading to one part of the scenario, part two being the Down's Syndrome kid, who (and I was involved in fighting a fire where this did happen) became incoherent when he got excited, and thus could only bang on the door and yell.

The problem is that without knowing any and all circumstances involved it's irresponsible to say that just shooting through the door is the final solution.

In our town we had a young man who was sufficiently able to take care of himself and wandered far and wide on his bicycle and was considered harmless. He was, unfortunately a sign of the times, sometimes mistreated, even by adults, and his constantly cheerful demeanor his his festering resentment at being made the butt of many jokes and pranks. Suddenly we had a series of "unexplained" grass fires around the town, but nobody connected them to George, because although he had a tendency to show up at all sorts of fires and emergencies (several volunteer fire departments with sirens notifying members) he was not always on the scene of one of the suspicious ones.

George finally set one that went wrong and was threatening the property owner's barn and outbuildings, so he bicycled to the front of the house, carried his bicycle up the steps, remounted it and then and banged and rattled the door while yelling loudly that he was sorry (not that there was a fire) and it took a few minutes for the owner to realize that he was trying to tell them about the fire. The outbuildings were saved, although the back of the barn was scorched.

It's not much of a stretch to extend that circumstance into my scenario, and that's only one I can think of where firing a gun through the door would be inadvisable if not purely criminal. Yes, you may have a glass door, but even so, you might not have the best view, and there may be many other reasons for the person to be banging than just trying to break in. I hold the same opinion still.
