A press conference just wrapped up in California where the Democrats (who have an overwhelming majority in the state) unveiled their latest gun control agenda. And since the Democratic majority is so strong, these aren’t proposals — it’s a preview of things to come.

Possession of hollow point bullets and similar assault bullets a felony.
Must register and report ammo purchases. Only purchase max 500 rounds.
10 round magazine limit
ALL magazines must be fixed to the gun (can not be removed without the use of a tool)
100% prohibition of all magazines greater than 10 rounds. All previous grandfathered magazines become illegal. Felony if you keep one.
Changing definition of shotgun revolving cylinder — Basically only single shot shotguns will remain legal.
Bullet Buttons will become illegal — All AR and AK style rifles that are currently equipped with them will be designated Assault Weapons. Felony to possess.
All gun owners now must be licensed like drivers.
All gun owners must carry gun liability insurance

I have said for a long time that they won't ban guns, they will ban ammo or restrict is so bad since ammo is not 2A.

That's a ridiculous argument that would never hold up in court. It would be like saying you're not harming a carpenter by banning the use of air compressors due to the noise the make. They can still use a hammer, right? Yeah, and the gun owner can use a knife, or mace, or pepper spray, etc., etc. Besides, aren't there already laws on the books stating that ammo is a firearm?

We can only hope. Pacific beachfront in Arizona would be awesome. But think about the resulting water pollution. The environmental will be all over....no, wait

On a more serious note, I do not believe that today's Supreme Court would confirm the CA bill as Constitutional.

Nope, not in CA. When they banned all sorts of assault rifles, magazines, did drop tests, ect NOBODY cared. I wrote the politicians, the NRA and nobody cared. The statements are always about spending resources else where because it is too hard in CA, ect. They are now trying to pass all those CA laws and more nationwide, now people care when it may be to late. Wait till CA does the next wave like this and it spreads again.

Some of the great CA laws that got me.

Drop test. Guns had to be "drop tested." to be sold legally in CA. There was a process and guns that didn't pass couldn't be sold in CA.

Gun locks. In some counties you had to purchase a trigger lock. Ok fine, but what happens when the gun comes with a trigger lock? You had to purchase a trigger lock. That made sense!

I think a note from experience elsewhere on this particular bit is in order.

In the Czech Republic, they love their guns. They own and shoot them at a rate those of us on this forum would consider admirable. However, there are some leftover weird bits in the law from back in the bad old days of the Eastern Bloc.

One of those is that hollow points and soft points are illegal. Plain round-nose lead is the order of the day for revolvers. FMJ is all you get for your semi-auto pistols.

I am convinced (though I haven't been able to confirm it; I'll ask 'em about it at the NRA Annual Meeting coming up shortly) that Federal decided to go into production of expanding full metal jacket ammo for the Czech market. Yes, that also meant that the stuff was legal in New Jersey, too, but I get the impression that not much of it was sold in the U.S. A few years ago, the Czech suppliers bought it by the shipload.

Laws change, though. The Czechs have now made the expanding FMJ illegal. It's back to plain old hardball for them. Federal has re-branded the line as their "Guard Dog" ammo, e.g.: http://www.federalpremium.com/products/ ... spx?id=938" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The ammo works by putting a cavity between the jacket nose and the lead core of the bullet. The cavity is filled with some sort of plastic and the jacket is pre-stressed along longitudinal lines. Here's a cross-section rendering:



Here's a picture of a recovered bullet. You're looking at the nose of the bullet. The nose just flattens and the jacket splits.



I have no idea of the definition of "similar assault bullets" (Which of the speakers, at what time code, referred to "assault bullets"? I can't find it.) but if this passes, I imagine "Guard Dog" will become a household phrase among California gun owners.
