Gun control is racist

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

Gun control is racist

Post by baldeagle »

Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor with whom I correspond, wrote the following essay: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/1123 ... ra-history" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He uses a provocative question to denigrate the NRA in his article, mocking their history and their reasoning abilities.

This was my response to him, emailed a few minutes ago.
You missed the main point and conflated privileges with rights.

First, as your essay ably shows, gun control laws have always been used to control people that were considered undesirable, either due to race, ethnicity or behavior. And that's precisely what the recently proposed laws will do - control people who are now considered undesirable, i.e. those with guns, primarily thought to be white males.

Secondly, the comparison toward the end of gun rights vis-a-vis property rights, voting rights and marriage rights is fallacious because all three lack the same level of protection under the Constitution that gun rights do (unless you hale from the school of penumbras and emanations.)
He sometimes responds to my missives. It will be interesting to see if he does in this case.

He didn't reply to the first part. To the second part he gave me the standard answer that rights, whether enumerated or not, were all of the same importance.
