Like me you were probably watching the president’s gun control speech today. Was told this morning the presentation today was a revised version that was completed just last night after a bunch of back and forth between the White House and Senate leaders. Guessing that would be Harry Reid mostly. Last week the president was ready to go all in on the executive order scenario. Confiscation was going to be in play. Then the backlash came and it forced Obama to back off. He didn’t want to but after Reid said it was a no go, and the NRA was preparing to go to war with the White House, the president was given a revised script and that is what we heard this morning. You could tell too. Obama stumbled over the words more than usual. He didn’t have the time to prep the script like he normally does. Probably fuming he was forced to read the new version also.

This time WE WON and OBAMA LOST.

Regardless, the fight is still on.

I do agree that the 23 EO's (or EA's or whatever) amounted to much less than I was expecting.
And Harry Reid's comments were hopeful as well. (did I just say that Harry said something "hopeful"...? )

Color me skeptical that a republican insider would know what goes on between Obama and Harry Reid.

I do think the EOs were tamer than Obama wanted. The potential for abuse is there, but I was shocked at how....toothless the EOs announced yesterday were.

The battles not over, but the winds seem favorable. I'm cautiously optimistic we can stop any gun control.

I do think the EOs were tamer than Obama wanted. The potential for abuse is there, but I was shocked at how....toothless the EOs announced yesterday were.

The battles not over, but the winds seem favorable. I'm cautiously optimistic we can stop any gun control.

I did read an article somewhere where Reid said that he wouldn't make any of his Democrats sacrifice themselves on a vote that the was sure would fail in the House.

While I'm hopeful that the backlash was successful and portends a reduction in the overall Democratic reach, I'm certainly not holding my breath. The NY Legislature vote is a stark reminder of the agenda and the milestones that they have set up in their progress. I suspect that the reaction to that vote was one of the factors in the watered down Obama approach.

I think that the global push to remove guns from the American public is so strong that we are going to see another attempt to accomplish it every time anything bad happens from here on out. We've always been asked to "own" the acts of the worst of society. That will only get worse.

And I would agree with you. There are some of Obama's 23 bullet points that make me very wary, but overall, it was a FAIL for now. I don't think that this means we can all relax. But it does mean that the immediate full-court press has been stopped, and we now have time to take a deep breath and begin to be better organized, and to start picking apart his proposals. We can be certain that, even with those bullet points we might agree with, as read, HIS interpretation will be vastly different than our own.

For instance, what is a "dangerous person" (item #4)? I worry for those of my friends who have served this country honorably under very difficult circumstances, and who now suffer from PTSD. They are not unstable, and they are productive citizens. Are they to be disarmed because some communist flunky in a poorly disguised communist administration thinks they can take guns away from a whole class of people in one fel swoop by ginning up an irrational fear of PTSD's psychological wounds? Does anybody think that Obama's media lapdogs (but I repeat myself) wouldn't jump right on that bandwagon and beat that drum until the sheep started to believe it?

And speaking of the media lapdogs (but I repeat myself), when I inherit my rightful throne on Planet TAM, I will immediately remind ALL reporters that SCOTUS has affirmed that police have no duty to protect, and I would institute Constitutional Carry and strike down all anti-dueling laws.

I think it might improve the tenor of discussion in any future "national conversations" quite a bit.

The EOs slowly chip-away at lawful gun owner's rights, doctor/patient confidentiality, HIPPA, and etc. In today's current climate, who in their right mind is going to see a mental health worker if they are going through a hard time (no pun intended)? If I am a gun-owner and there is a strong chance my doctor is going to report me, then I will not seek help which may cause more problems for friends, family, and others around me. And from previous training and experience in this field, when people are not able to properly vent and/or seek help, often times the stage is set for a less-than desireable outcome- and that is putting it mildly.

Obama may had to change his script but he is committed to pushing reform; he said it, and he even used children & emotions to forward his agenda. That is not a celebration in my book. Obama realizes that he will not be able to make sweeping reforms so I imagine we will see more of this behavior from him. The EOs will be challenged in court and it will take a lot of time, but once the "shock factor" of so many EOs wears off, there will be more.

I agree with v-rog that it is distinctly possible that veterans will not be willing to admit to any sort of psychological issues if they think its going to end up putting them on a gun-ban list, forces them to surrender their firearms, and has absolutely no recourse to prove otherwise if they are "reported" by a doctor. The military services already have a hard enough time convincing folks to go to mental health professionals and that it will not impact their military career.
