It looks like HB 2357 got rid of the requirement for a front plate starting January 1st.

Rear plate too. We still need the registration sticker, but plates are gone from 502.473 in six weeks. Pickett says he dun goofed, but the law is the law is the law (same as CHL restrictions, right?)

Unless they have a special session...or violate the Texas Constitution. :grumble :fire
This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

:smilelol5: An LEO could read the plate during daytime.

I can't imagine any groups other than LE and prosecutors opposing this bill. Of course, they both have a very strong voice and have the most to lose if it passed.
Most of the time, if law enforcement loses, we all lose.

Being able to read the front plate of a car coming toward you in the other lane could mean the difference in saving an abducted child, recovering a stolen car or many other scenarios.

Just saying. :tiphat:

That sounds logical on the surface and I'm curious whether there's a statistically significant difference between Texas and states without front plates, when it comes to stopping or solving those crimes.

...there are a lot of non-moving circumstances where a front plate lets a cop or citizen make an ID on a vehicle...I'm for keeping it at 2....

Would having only one plate reduce the registration fee? Probably not. I for one would like to have both of mine.

Is there anything in the legislation that REQUIRES only one plate? Could you optionally use two plates anyway?

When I was a kid, NY issued two plates, but only required one (talk about ripe for abuse) and personal plates (my fire department membership was proudly displayed on my front plate) abounded.

Speaking of abuse, my friend "Lenny" bought a car, no tags, no title, no nothing, and we drove it to his back yard from about five miles away (I wasn't one of the drivers, I was just a passenger) We took the front tag off one of the other guys' car, and put it on Lenny's, and drove on over there. If a cop had noticed, it might have been pretty interesting, two cars with the same plates.

Maybe. They accidentally dropped the $200 fine in the new law for the violation of not having license plates, but it's still illegal. Even then, it doesn't sound clear cut that the penalty can't still be enforced. They're waiting on an attorney general opinion on it:

Very interesting indeed. I recently purchased an automobile. I received new plates for it about two days before my current plates were transferred. So now I have an extra set of plates and registration for my car. But the LEO’s now run the plate number before they actually speak with you. So if the plates are not on the car description you are in deep trouble. My extra plates and sticker are going in the garbage where they belong.

Along vehicle licensing changes:

They now want to know the color of a trailer when you register it.

A few years ago I got new plates for my van. Being a responsible citizen, I put the old plates in the (Ft Worth) recycle bin.
2 years later, I received in the mail a parking ticket for a vehicle with those plates on it.

Back to the original topic, I'm for the single plate option. Only 2 of our 5 vehicles have a front plate.

"rlol" "rlol" As a farm kid, I think rust should absolutely be considered a legitimate color for trailer registration!
