Has anyone been following this bill?
It states:
"requires a nonresident applicant for a concealed firearm permit to hold a current
concealed firearm or concealed weapon permit from the applicant's state of
residency that recognizes the validity of the Utah permit in that state or has
reciprocity with the Utah concealed firearm permit law."
It just passed the Senate, and is on its way to the House. Any thoughts??
John.

Re: Utah SB36 for nonresident concealed permits
If I have a home-state CHL from a home state that has reciprocity with Utah, then getting a Utah CHL is almost pointless...
Unless the Utah CHL gets me reciprocity with a state that does not recognize my home state CHL..
Unless the Utah CHL gets me reciprocity with a state that does not recognize my home state CHL..
I am not a lawyer. This is NOT legal advice.!

True.
But for those that want/have the Utah Nonresident CHP to carry in Texas may not have that option much longer.

Re: Utah SB36 for nonresident concealed permits
Very smart. They were losing reciprocity with states that were angry over their residents not getting home state CHLs. This way they no longer have to worry about other state legislatures getting upset with them.
On a side note, in general when you are a resident of a state you need to be licensed in that state to do things that the state requires a license for (trades, driving, etc). Why should a CHL be any different?
Edit to add, I have a Utah CHL and I have had one for many more years than I have had my Texas permit. When I moved to Texas I made sure I got a resident permit. I enjoyed being able to carry on my Utah permit while I waited for the Texas one to come through and I admit I did not feel rushed to take my class, I waited nearly 6 months. My Utah permit is a great backup, and nice to use if I ever need it for a state that does not recognize my Texas permit, but it should not be a replacement for a resident permit.
