The complaint is not about showing the card, it is that corporate instituted that because of the WalMart shooting in El Peso. Scratch your head figuring out what their logic is.

03Lightningrocks wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2019 6:06 pm These people are not stupid. They know there is ZERO way to prevent an armed shooter from killing people in their stores. The goal is to APPEAR like they are doing something.
Actually there is a way, they could hire armed guards with sub machine guns at each door instead of handicapped guys in wheelchairs. Technically that might work, asking me for my ID doesn't work and the poor guy working the door sure couldn't stop anyone. Corporate stupidity as someone mentioned.
That may or may not actually prevent a mass-shooting, but it certainly would not be commercially feasible. Many customers, including me, would not walk in if they thought that level of security was warranted.

Chas.
I had the exact same thought when I read the comment about armed guards with sub machine guns. My visual was of a police state with armed militia patrolling the streets. I am certain we don't want that. At the entrance to stores or on the streets of America.
I am not proposing men with machine guns at the doors. The logic though that showing a membership card at the doors to a handicapped employee in no way protects the people in the store. Many have suggested though that if a store does post 06/07 and does not provide adequate security that the store be held liable if one is injured by a nut with a weapon. Stayed in Dallas for 2 months while my wife was in treatment and the Tom Thumb that I shopped at always had a security guard, one big guy too. I don't see that in small town Wichita Falls.

The other thing is that if the store has a pharmacy you don't need a membership to use the pharmacy. No card to show, you just say pharmacy and walk in. Perhaps mass shooters already know that. Certainly Sam Walton's legacy does not know or care about reality, only optics.

Who's logic? I scratch my head at the person who is concerned about showing ID at a membership shopping club. I guess the tin foil hat needs to be resized.

In addition, I don't see where we know the reason given that started this thread to be fact. "Some dude" working at entrance said so? What about the 20 plus years before that when they did it to keep a shopper from shopping with no membership?

We have always had a card checker at the entrance to Sam’s ( however lax). However, this is the first time we have had a sign stating it is a requirement to present your membership card and they have been so diligent doing so.

Of course not, the expiration date is not printed on the card ;-)
Don't they scan the card when you check out and won't complete the sale if membership not current?
Correct- but the person at the door isn't scanning, just a glance to see if you have the card

The funny thing is you can't purchase anything at Sam's without a card! I would think it would be to the stores advantage to allow non club members to walk around and check prices, when you go to checkout you have to swipe your card! I think in the last several years I have been ask to show my card once upon entry, the other times they just say welcome to "Sam's club" if that!

That is true in theory but the problem is that some folks will load up a cart, go to the register and unload it all, then look dumb founded when they are not able to buy it. Meanwhile, customers with memberships are standing there getting delayed due to the doofus. Just the same, this whole thread is based on a claim with zero validity. Are we now looking for reasons to get worked up as gun owners? Sams has been checking for memberships at the door for as long as they have been in business. Yes sporadically, but doing it just the same. I don't believe this has anything to do with the shooting down south. The door greeter is full of it. This one is a non issue.

It’s been a requirement since Sams opened up. I think someone is yanking someone’s chain.
For years they have not been checking ID at the entrance. Now they are and have a sign. All I did was ask the guy at the door why and he said because of the shooting down south. I posted only to show the failure of corporate logic. Not to hear that they always do it and not for someone to tell me it is a requirement for years when that is not true over the last 5 years or so. You know, the people on this forum either don't read previous posts or just seem to want to argue about nothing. I posted my experience and what I was told. Take it for whatever you all want.

My experience at my local Sam's Club is the same as yours. They required ID and then they didn't check for years. I don't remember when they started checking again but I believe that it was earlier than the El Paso shooting. I didn't think anything about it since corporate policies seem to change on a regular basis.

To underscore my point, I keep a bag of change with me in my vehicle. I rarely keep change in my pocket so when I make a cash purchase and get coins back, throw them in my change bag. In the past when the change bag got heavy, I would empty it, wrap the coins by type and take them to the bank, depositing them into my account. One time, the bank personnel treated me badly, saying that wrapped coins could not be dealt with and made a show of dumping my wrapped coins into a heavy plastic back, mixing them all together and they broken open the wrappers. They then sealed the bag and set it off. A couple of days later, the deposit showed up in my account. I followed that process a couple of more times, showing up with a plastic bag of mixed coins, having them seal it and send it off. Last week, I tried the same thing again.

This time, I was taken aside by one of the bank employees who sat with me as we used his plastic "counter" to stack the coins and then he and I wrapped them. He gave me paper money in exchange. When I inquired about when the policy had changed and how I was supposed to know about such changes, he shrugged his shoulders. I'm happy to play by the rules but need to know what they are. They seem to be able to send me emails and USPS marketing in vast quantities. Sam's Club does the same. Apparently the rule makers never talk to the salespeople. Somehow, I'm not surprised. Just my $.02. I don't trust anything that any of the regular employees say about corporate policy. They are as far out of that loop as I am.
