The officers backed up a LONG WAY. They did everything they could to not kill him, but I also imagine that part of this was to get to an area that was clear behind? Still, that situation got WAY TOO CLOSE.

The actions in that video are mind-boggling. There were so many tactically unsound actions displayed that I can't help but think it is the result of law enforcement fear of being prosecuted for using justifiable deadly force. After finally shooting the thug several times, the officer actually let him get up again to continue the attack, even though it was clear that he was not going to get verbal compliance. The officer being attacked actually holstered his handgun while the thug made his final attack after having been shot. I cannot imagine what he was thinking to go hands on with a knife-wielding attacker. He lost his command presence when he retreated and kept saying "please" multiple times.

I know some younger folks, especially those who have never been in law enforcement, may interpret my comments as an example of pride or a macho attitude, but it is not. Once a potential attacker perceives you are fearful and/or unwilling to use your handgun, the likelihood of an attack goes up exponentially. That's why a command presence is to critical.

I couldn't tell of the officer was injured or not, but he is very lucky to be alive. Scenes like these make me sick.

Could not agree more with your assessment. Spot on.....every point.

I believe what Chas posted about law enforcement being afraid of prosecution may have been part of this. Our law enforcement officers are being put in serious danger by being put through the ringer every time they have to shoot an armed assailant.

In a similar vein, just last month:

Man fatally shot by police officer in St Paul

The officer “was stopped at the stop sign when he was suddenly struck from behind by another motor vehicle,” St. Paul police spokesperson Sgt. Mike Ernster said at a news conference late Sunday night. “The officer exited his vehicle, and was immediately confronted by the driver of the striking vehicle, and a fight ensued."

During the fight, the officer fired his weapon and struck the driver. The man was pronounced dead at the scene; the officer was not injured.

According to friends, Davis was celebrating the completion of a six-week maintenance and facilities training course that included certifications just two days before he was killed. Friends say he was respectful and had a big heart. While a community continues to mourn and search for answers as to how and why he is no longer here, his family is on the way from Chicago and Las Vegas to say their good-byes.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the shooting. Investigators say there is body camera video, and many in the community are demanding to see it. There is no word on when that will happen.

This is about clear-cut as you can get, I think. The video starts just before the officer's car was hit from behind by Ronald Davis. While the officer is still getting out of his vehicle Davis is running at him raising his right arm with something in it, and is on top of the officer before he clears the vehicle. The officer starts yelling at him and it appears the officer backs up and falls down. The cop gets back up and there's some dancing around before the officer fires once and Davis falls while the officer retreats behind his car.

The video shows us what a great guy Ronald Davis was. I guess they would have been OK with the officer being killed by the thug. I am so sick and tired of ghetto thugs playing the race card when they attack cops and get killed.

It certainly is...and that officer acted in an incredibly generous way...all the while... responding appropriately. He gave the perpetrator every opportunity 'possible' to break off the attack.

IMO the officer could not have done a better job under those circumstances. Great cop if you ask me.
