Lethality of firearm-related injuries in the United States population

STUDY OBJECTIVE:
To characterize differences in the lethality of firearm-related injuries in selected demographic subgroups using national representative data on fatal and nonfatal firearm-related injuries. We also characterize the lethality of firearm-related injuries by intent of injury and anatomic location of the gunshot wound.
Apparently, the national fatality rate for all kinds of firearm injuries—all ages, genders, and weapon types—is 31.7%. I believe that the fatality rate for handgun injuries is lower....around 20%.

After the Sullivan Act was passed in NY the firearm fatality rate went up. Banning handguns led to the increased use of rifles and shotguns.

I know this has been posted before (maybe by TAM?), but I still find this to be of the highest interest on the subject. Anesthesiologist speaking (to students, perhaps) on the subject of gunshot wounds.
