CDC did not publish data supporting Gary Kleck’s DGU estimates
In 1995 Gary Kleck published a study showing that civilian Americans used guns to defend themselves approximately 2.5 million times per year. This far exceeds the number of criminal gun uses.
The study was quite “controversial.”
The next year the centers for disease control began collecting data on defensive gun uses in three surveys in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The data, when analyzed, support Kleck’s estimate of civilian DGUs and the fact that this far exceeds the number of criminal uses.
The CDC never published, released, or acknowledged the data.
Gary Kleck just recently found the CDC surveys. He published a study of the data here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm ... id=3124326
Reason’s article on this is here:

Government hiding the truth from the people? Not very shocking.
The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager
Re: CDC did not publish data supporting Gary Kleck’s DGU estimates
NPR ran a story about DGUs last week, and a lot of gun control sites picked it up. This new Kleck paper makes a good counterpunch. Actually a one-two combination because it validates the claim about CDC bias.PriestTheRunner wrote:My thoughts exactly....J.R.@A&M wrote:Wow.

The link below is not working and returning the error that Grundy is talking about...

Its funny that any back of the envelop threat assessment will show that the most common threat as actually an animal attack and banning firearms actually puts humans at a disadvantage no matter what the law says, because animals do not obey human laws.
Its sad that people out their are so gullible as to fall for being conned out of their God-given rights.

Re: CDC did not publish data supporting Gary Kleck’s DGU estimates
Man, I really wanted to read Gary Kleck's paper at SSRN, linked and posted in the Reason article as https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm ... id=3124326. Even did an advanced search at SSRN for everything written by Kleck. 14 results but none of them the right one about the CDC data. The closest seems to be this one, https://ssrn.com/abstract=3134859, How the Hemenway Surveys Distorted Estimates of Defensive Gun Use Frequency, but that isn't the one about the CDC and DGU. Comments under the Reason article indicate that the original paper at SSRN was available on April 21 but no longer available at least as of today. I tried to look at it last night but got the message, "The abstract you requested was not found." Thought I'd try again today.

Thanks. But shucks. You have to be registered and Calguns won't accept my perfectly valid email address to register. Google has some other sites that might have the paper. I'll keep looking.pdq_wizzard wrote:one of the Mods on this site has it

Thanks for that.
I read it back on Saturday.... I really don't want to be conspiracy-theoristy but dang that 'disappeared' quickly after gaining some traction.
Don't know of any good reason ssrn would drop the paper.
Re: CDC did not publish data supporting Gary Kleck’s DGU estimates
You rock! Thanks! I've hit almost dozen other sites in the meantime, and only a couple of them have recognized that the original paper has been removed by SSRN. I wasn't familiar with SSRN before, and unless Gary Kleck asked them to remove his paper, which seems pretty unlikely, they removed it in censorship. Quoting SSRN: "SSRN supports the Open Access movement. All scholars may submit papers for free, and author-submitted content is downloadable at no charge by users worldwide." So is it "open access unless we disagree with your politics"?SQLGeek wrote:I have a Calguns account so I downloaded it.
