No guns are registered with the FBI. The only thing they may have access to, is background check information through NICS. I have several guns that were were purchased before there was a requirement for a background check, as well as guns purchased since having my LTC that were not subjected to a background check. Where would the FBI obtain data, on firearm ownership, average number owned, and gender/ethnic information?
That is why groups try to conduct these studies, because there is no national registry for guns, and even background checks can be misleading due to the fact that multiple guns can be purchased on a single NICS inquiry. The only concrete data, is that manufacturers have sold x number of guns, over the last x number of years. But there is no data to differentiate between first time buyers, and buyers who already own multiple guns.
