I just completed a study of all 353 "mass shootings" tracked by the Mass Shooting Tracker website. Here's the article: https://www.txantimedia.com/?p=2097
Some facts. Only 2% of the shootings are what I would define as ones that most people worry about. For example, the shooting in Charleston at the church was completely unpredictable by the victims. They went to church expecting to pray and ended up being shot. Most people do not worry about gang shootings or drug-related shootings, because most people aren't involved in those types of activities. The vast majority of these shootings involve gangs, drug dealers and other criminal-related activities like bar fights or arguments at parties.
There are two categories of people who do need to worry about these types of shootings; those unfortunate enough to live in the areas where criminal activity is rampant and people who live with people who are violent. Domestic violence constituted 16% of the total shootings. And they are particularly deadly. Very few people escape alive from a home where someone decides to shoot everyone including themselves.
Of the 2% three were hate crimes, two were cases of mentally unstable actors and two were islamic terrorism. I'm sure all of us are familiar with at least some of them. The Charleston church shooting, the Chattanooga Marine recruiting station shooting, the on-camera shooting of the TV broadcasters, the so-called Planned Parenthood shooting and the recent terrorist attack in San Bernardino. The two others as lesser known. A shooting at a movie theatre in Monroe, LA, and a shooting in Colorado Springs where a guy randomly shot people as was killed by the police.

I did a similar much less in depth study on the website after an article was released in our school news paper that linked to that website. It takes a whopping 15 minutes to debunk it if that. The fact that the left wing even thinks about using it as a credible source is comical. Nice work though!
