Nassau county strips DA employee gun rights
Outrageously unconstitutional and beyond poorly thought out. Also in violation of New York state law. What kind of idiots are running amok up there?
Please read some of their "rationale" for doing this. You'll flip your lid.

But the DA has turned around and revised their policy, removing the Prohibition against private ownership of firearms. Happened today.
I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal

Do we really need to ask that question?Redneck_Buddha wrote: What kind of idiots are running amok up there?

If you're standing still, you're loosing.
Re: Nassau county strips DA employee gun rights
This is actually old news, but maybe it has reared its head again?
I know that prior to Heller, the Nassau County DA forbid handgun ownership by his staff. Even the online application for the position of assistant DA mentioned this, and it asked if you had ever owned a handgun or if you had a carry license from any state. Certainly seemed the implication of these questions was either you wouldn't be hired, or maybe you would if you got rid of your guns/license. (In fact, I am pretty sure I posted on this board about that, way back when.)
When Heller came out, that verbiage disappeared from the application form, but I figured the "unwritten" rules of the office were probably still pretty clear. I guess the current DA tried to put it back in writing?

Perhaps. Or since this is NY, you get the government that the people in the cemetery voted for.RoyGBiv wrote:Ha!

Not old news. I heard this being discussed on the radio last night by a candidate running for DA of Staten Island. As she said, notably absent from the reports and discussion is any consideration for the right of a spouse or other occupant of the home, not employed by the DA's office, to exercise their right to own a handgun. She didn't seem to think it was legal or enforceable.

My point is/was that the Nassau County DA, regardless of the actual person in the office, has a long history of trying to deny 2A rights to his or her own staff, not to mention everyone else. The fact that they're are still trying is not "new", only the latest details. It's interesting to note that the facial justification for this is to keep assistant DAs from being shot by the cops simply for having a gun.

Re: Nassau county strips DA employee gun rights
The documents posted show the start date of this to be in 2006, so it has been policy for around 9 nine years. I haven't seen reported why it became enough of an issue now for it to be rescinded.ELB wrote:My point is/was that the Nassau County DA, regardless of the actual person in the office, has a long history of trying to deny 2A rights to his or her own staff, not to mention everyone else. BTW, the DA candidate I alluded to said that Cuomo has called on the Democrats in the NY State Assembly to shut down the government until the Republicans agree to more gun control. I haven't even seen that mentioned on Drudge.

I'm not sure, but I think it is because one of the Volokh's at The Volokh Conspiracy blog now hosted by the Washington Post brought it up as an wildly blatant infringement of 2A rights.VMI77 wrote: ...

The problem is mostly philosophical...as it amounts to extortion. More significantly, it isn't even extortion of the Republicans, but of those who have absolutely nothing to do with the matter and no control over it.
I suspect it's mostly hollow rhetoric and rationally the Republicans would have no choice but to walk out....but these days assuming rational behavior from the GOP may be a mistake, so who knows what they'd do.
