Chore Boys and Silencers

But that’s not all. The original letter included a question about the owner of a legally owned silencer having a reserve of such pads. In case, you know, they needed to clean something. According to the ATF that would be considered a “stockpile” and considered an illegal act.
This is old but new to me and searching the forum I didn't find anything on this. The Weapons Man blog, where I initially came across it has the letters on the subject from the ATF. He implies that they backed off of this position but I haven't found verification of that and the letter about it suggests it might still be a potential problem: http://weaponsman.com/?p=25748#more-25748

The letter says it's an offense if someone "accumulates or otherwise intends".....and that replacing the sound adsorbing material in a legal suppressor is the same as manufacturing one. Note, the letter also refers to bottles, rubber washers, copper pads, and steel wool. I don't have a suppressor now but I might want one some day....anyone have more recent info on this?

I guess that means they don't wear out or have to be replaced or have the guts redone after X number of rounds?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Correct. Today''s centerfire suppressors supposedly don't even need to be cleaned. In fact, you can''t even disassemble some of them.

Rimfire is inherently dirty, so they need to be disassembled and cleaned regularly or the chambers will fill up with crud.

The baffles still get eroded though. From what I can tell its easier to go out and buy a new suppressor then deal with getting baffles replaced.

Most rifle cans are sealed and the handgun calibers are take apart specially 22lr being so dirty.

My rifle suppressor has all Inconel baffles which help with the erosion. most rifle cans may only have the first or second baffles made of Inconel while some all of them are made of it.

The ones rated for full auto are made of higher quality materials but still wear out the first few baffles.
