I've carried a Kershaw 5550ST for a while and a Browning before that.

AEA,
Thanks for the link to the law! I'm back to carrying my assisted opening knife now. It's a Meyerco Speedster (don't laugh) it was less than $15 and has a SS blade.
One of these days I'm going to spend a few bucks and get one I can be proud of.
Regards, OE

You can unhitch those wagons now. The new laws are in effect and clear it for assisted open knives in Texas.AEA wrote:Hitch up them wagons boys.......heading East for Florida!

Just don't carry auto-assist knives in San Antonio. Lock balde knives are ALL illegal there.

If that is the case, then it is another example of a City trying to circumvent State Law.
Not enforceable, but it will take someone with money for defense to prove it. Even if it is proven, I see it taking many more before the State AG will do anything about it.
EDIT: I have been corrected and I agree that I was incorrect in this statement.

The city code does not surpass state law. The state state outlaws knives over 5.5". San Antonio city code outlaws lock blade knives UNDER 5.5".shooter4 wrote:Just left SA. I disagree......
The City is outlawing the most widely used pocket knife that is made, a lock blade.
There is no Texas law that outlaws a lock blade (as long as size restrictions are upheld).
The City is overstepping their authority and should be brought to task.

Re: Get them Auto Assist knives in your pocket tomorrow!
AEA,
The problem is that the city can always make laws that are more strict than the state law, they cannot make them more relaxed. If there is no state law specifying a knife is legal, the city can ban them. And since we almost never pass laws that specify what is legal, San Antonio can ban lock blades, no matter how popular they are. The preemption law only applies to firearms, unfortunately, so again, SA has the authority to ban the knives.
In one of the other threads, there was an interesting point made though. State law bans knives with blades over 5.5 inches. City ordinance bans knives with under 5.5 inch blades. So a knife with a blade that is exactly 5.5 inches would still be legal.
The good news is that the oridnance is only a class C misdemeanor and is very rarely enforced. But we really need to get it off the books anyway.
