Did anyone notice how wrong the reporter quoted the number of CHL's?
His article quoted "about 230,000".

I gave him the correct information by providing him the link to the DPS
CHL stats.

The current number of CHL's, as of 12/31/08 is over 314,000.

I also pointed out to him the tidbit that of the 2008 CHL's issued,
18% were to women.

The stats break down new CHL's by zipcode.

I'd like to see the zip code breakdown for ALL existing CHL's, not
just the newest year's crop.

I wonder if anyone with more techno brains than me can plug this data into Google Maps so we can see where CHLs are the most/least concentrated?

The problem is there is not a breakdown of all CHL's by zipcode available via the DPS website. It only shows a year to year issued license count. There is no way to tell how many didn't renew, were suspended, etc. by zipcode.

Quoting the real numbers to reporters seems to never accomplish anything. When the DMN printed a story from AP about gun ownership and quoted about 90,000 owners in TX, they even argued with me after I sent them the right data.

I think it would be great to start seeing those Center-of-Mass vehicle safes start flying off the shelves...That could slow down your average smash and grabber...But we've been saying that for a couple of years now...

They don't make a Console Vault for my truck, no matter how many times I call/email/send letters....

I have a Dodge Magnum. Plenty of room but nothing to fit. I believe I'm going to be doing some DIY customization. I've been able to hide cigarettes in it from Robin all these years, a 1911 shouldn't ge too mucher harder to find a place for...

That's almost great news. I work for a school district. Why couldn't they work out a compromise like requiring a trigger lock on the gun on school property? Why is my safety less important during my commute? What if you work for HISD and your car breaks down to or from work? Some of the neighborhoods aren't the best.

That would be a step backwards. With my CHL today I can legally have my handgun in my car at a school with no trigger lock.

And your employer can fire you for it. This bill would make a gun in the car a protected status, like if your Southern Baptist employer finds a Torah or Watchtower Magazine in your car and fires you for it. I don't have as much stock in this bill, since I won't work for any employer who does random vehicle searches. If they find out by some other method, then I'm not concealing as well as I should. If I have to use it, and they fire me afterward, they're definitely not the kind of people I would work for.

OTOH, carrying prohibitions are pretty much a moot point for me at the moment unless somebody slips in a change to the security regulations. I don't plan to make a career out of this job, but this isn't exactly a good time to change jobs, either.

The difference is when the school is the employer. Just like an employer can stop an employee from carrying without the proper 30.06 sign.
