I am taking a business trip to El Paso next week working my way back through Lubbock before returning to Austin. I am still in the Waiting room so I will be carrying in my vehicle under the MPA. I would like to take the scenic route to Lubbock and maybe do a little 3 card poker in Ruidoso on my way to Lubbock. Does New Mexico have a similar law to the MPA or should I just stick to staying in Texas?

Your CHL/LTC is valid in NM. Carry just as you would here, but bone up on the state's signage requirements.

Places Off-Limits Even With a Permit/License

In New Mexico, licensees can only carry one concealed handgun at any time. It is legal to carry more than one firearm. However, only one firearm may be concealed on your person at a time. This restriction does not apply to firearms carried in your vehicles, on or off your person.
You may NOT carry a handgun, openly or concealed, in:

• Schools...except in vehicle if older than 19 (30-7-2.1 NMSA 1978, fourth degree felony)
• University Premises...except in vehicle if older than 19 (30-7-2.4 NMSA 1978 petty misdemeanor)
• Preschools (29-19-8 NMSA 1978)
• Courts (29-19-11 NMSA 1978, without the consent of the presiding judge) Court means: any Federal, State, County, Municipal, or Tribal Court;
• Tribal Land (29-19-10, NMSA, unless authorized by the governing body of the tribe or pueblo)
• Public buses (30-7-13 NMSA 1978, misdemeanor)
• Airport security zones
• Federal Properties...Military Bases, Courthouse, etc.
• National Parks and National Wildlife Management Areas are OK if you have a NM Permit/License to Carry or a Permit/License valid in New Mexico.
• On private property where the owner has posted signs indicating that you may not carry or if the owner tells you that you cannot

My issue is that I don't have my CHL/LTC yet. It is in the mountain of paperwork at DPS. It appears I won't have any problems in my vehicle, and I can even OC except prohibited places, but since the casino is on Tribal Lands, it appears I won't be stopping there since I don't know if I can even have a weapon in the car while on Tribal lands.

If your taking U.S. Highway 62 you will drive through the towns I work and live in, in fact you will drive right past my house. Give me a heads up and I may be able to meet you somewhere once you cross back into Texas and we can grab a bite or something.

New Mexico is an unlicensed OC state, Concealed Carry is by license only. Also of important note is that you can only conceal one handgun in NM, but can OC more. NM does recognize --most-- Texas CHL/LTCs, although those issued to under 21 military are not recognized. NM considers your vehicle to be an extension of your home and is for the most part unregulated as far as firearms go. Reservations are treated as foreign nations and most if not all of your Second Amendment rights are typically considered null and void while on tribal land.
