Word on the Utah concealed carry permit.

Post by 03Lightningrocks »

I just recieved my Utah permit yesterday. I sent it in the first or second week of January. Check was cashed on March 3rd. That was about 5 months from dropping it in mail. My son sent his packet in last July and had his permit by the end of August, about one month. It looks like they are just as swamped as Texas in applications. I wanted to give a heads up to anyone getting the Utah permit. be patient...and they will not check the status like Texas does. They emailed me to say they were way to busy to spend time looking up the status. very understandable...but it is what it is.

That sounds a lot like my Florida permit. Mailed it on 12/29 and received it 4 months later.
Carrying since 02/06/2009.

UTAH CHL Class in February, Packet sent in February, (Didn't keep tabs on the day. Around mid month.) Charged on March 10th, received June 1st. Roughly 90 days from credit card charge. I called Utah to see what their turnaround was 3 weeks ago, was told 120 days of receiving the package. So it seems to be on the mark.

I "was" under the impression it would be 60 days. After 90 days I sort of got annoyed with checking the mail. :banghead:
If my posts sounds like I got a monkey on my back... it's actually a gorilla. Just don't get offended. :)

LOL...That was the tough part for me too. I was watching for the mailman like a dog. Now that it is here my mail gets checked every couple days or so. :biggrinjester: The bills are all I get now anyway.

BTW...as I pointed out above, my son had a turn around of under 60 days from when he MAILED it!!! They really must have gotten bombed in apps since last summer.

Is there a Utah concealed firearm instructor in or around San Antonio?

Utah has made a tremendous effort to issue within 60 days. Unfortunately, they have experienced the same surge in applications that Texas has.

They are still issuing quicker than Texas, but not within 60 days for non-residents.

I don't personally know one. Charles Cotton is in Houston. I am in DFW area.

Here is the link to to the list of currently certified instructors: http://publicsafety.utah.gov/bci/docume ... te_052.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is a little off topic to the thread, but since I started the thread, I guess I can take it where I want...LOL. Anyway, my future son in law is wanting to get a permit. I was thinking of telling him to get the Utah non-resident permit since it is quicker, and cheaper. Is there any downside to a person just getting the Utah only and not worrying about getting Texas for awhile?

By federal law, guns are not allowed in school zones, EXCEPT for resident CHLs. For example, a Texas CHL allows you to have a gun in the car while in the parking lot, or picking up your child at a Texas school (but not inside the buildings or at the football game, for example), but in no other state. A Utah license does the same for a school in Utah, but in no other state.

That's true. Someone with a Utah license is in the same boat as everyone using MPA to have a pistol in their car. I don't know if anyone was convicted of the new school zone law after the previous one was declared unconstitutional but it's theoretically a risk if they stop and search you in a school zone.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Thanks for the info. It's funny, I never really thought about it before, but I suppose anyone carrying concealed in their car without a CHL would also be in violation while picking up the little ones. I would bet 1000 bucks that very few people are aware of this little gotcha in the law. I guess the best thing to do is stop before getting on school property and stashing the gun under a bush somewhere :biggrinjester: .

in a word, no. :biggrinjester:
thanks to ya'll for filling in whilst I was on vacation.

I used to live in a School Zone, with the fence seperating my Shanty and the School spitting distance from my back balcony.
kinda funny how my domicile was well within their 1000' dealy-whopper... :grumble
