Broken Bow, Oklahoma *Updated*

Headed up to Broken Bow, OK for a weekend soon with a couple of other families. Two of us have our TX CHL but are still fairly new to CHL. I have a couple of questions.

I have tried to read thru the OK law and I will admit, reading that stuff makes my head hurt. I didn't see any significant differences other than you can't carry in a governmental meeting and any no gun sign should be respected. That shouldn't be an issue for us. And we don't expect to be near any reservations or in the casinos. We will probably visit a state park and maybe a restaurant or two. Any gotcha's we need to be aware of.

As a TX CHL are we allowed to open carry? I am not sure I would but I am at least curious.

Is there a range nearby that is open to the public/non members?

I don't post much but I read the site just about every day. I do appreciate all the knowledge you guys share on here.

We go to Broken Bow twice a year (or did until I had some health issues) and we are do for a trip. We take a 5th wheel into Beaver's Bend.

I wouldn't suggest open carry especially without a license from Oklahoma. I can't help much on what the Oklahoma laws are, but we have had no trouble other than seeing a bear or two and wondering if the .45 we give me a head start.

Regarding OC in OK. Over at open carry in the Oklahoma section, several of the people there say that they have heard from some state official ( I don't remember which) that those people with licences from states that OK has reciprocal agreements with can open carry. However, what they are not clear on is whether or not that state allows them to open carry or not. It seems like we could, but I'm not certain enough for my comfort yet to even OC in my vehicle while driving through OK. I haven't been over to OCDO in a few weeks to see if there has been any more evidence that would make me more comfortable.

Here is the Oklahoma section over there. I haven't read through here in a while, so there might be some more helpful information in there since the last time I was. Careful of the language. It's not too bad in some of the state subsections like this, but it can get a little crude and in your face sometimes.

I am not a lawyer, this is NOT legal advice, just my opinion.

From the above link:

“No Firearm” signs in Oklahoma have no force of law unless they are posted on property that is specifically mentioned in State Law as being off limits to those with a Permit/License to Carry. If you are in a place not specifically mentioned in the law that is posted and they ask you to leave, you must leave. If you refuse to leave then you are breaking the law and can be charged. Even if the property is not posted and you are asked to leave you must leave. Always be aware of the possibility that responding Police Officers who may have been called without your knowledge and may not know the laws on trespass etc. could arrest you even if you are within the law.

The way I read it (again, my opinion, not legal advice), is that if your home state allows you to OC, you are allowed to OC in OK. This includes places like AK, where a permit to CC or OC is not required. IMO, TX CHL's CANNOT OC in OK.

Be careful where you are carrying. The lake is a Corp of Engineers lake. You will have to watch the COE boundaries and don't OC there for sure.

I will do some additional reading tonight. I am putting together a cheat sheet (and a conservative one at that).

It sure sounds like between the reservations and COE land, one definitely needs to know exactly where they stand, literally.

Also, I believe in OK you can't carry anything bigger than .45, so no .50 GI or anything.

There is a state that technically allows you to carry as many handguns as you want, but only ne can be concealed. I don't think Oklahoma is that state.

So if it has not changed I would suggest they are at least under the impression you can only conceal one at a time.

I personally do not want to go to jail on vacation.

Just a follow up to our trip to Broken Bow.

First off, thanks to everyone for their replies and information. The weather was perfect and we had a great time with friends and family. We spent most of our time in Beaver Bend State Park hiking, fishing and geocaching. We will definitely be going back and bringing our kayaks when it is warmer.

From a CHL perspective it was uneventful although I am still not real clear whose jurisdiction I was under at all times. Based on Wikipedia, the entire south eastern corner of Oklahoma is part of The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma's tribal jurisdictional area.

As soon as we crossed into Oklahoma on 37 we stopped at a Choctaw Travel Plaza for a pit stop. I stayed put in the car. Probably a good thing too as we ran into a few folks who started their weekend a little early and it was easy to keep an eye on things from the car.

The only time I had to disarm was when we went inside a park building and they were clearly marked in case you weren't sure.

Yes, I think so, although the trail map we picked up there referred to it as the Forest Heritage Center. But it did have a museum. And the totem pole.

Respectfully, That is simply incorrect.

The law is clear in the Okla SDA. As to the trooper who told you that, THEY were wrong (it wouldn't be the first time a LEO didn't understand the law; examples abound on this forum).
