New Utah Info

Post by Crossfire »

Hey all! We just finished our Utah instructor renewal class, and wanted to share.

There has been a lot of talk about Utah doing away with the non-resident permit, but trust me, the BCI is committed to keeping it. They recognize that there are many reasons for non-residents to want the Utah permit (cost, reciprocity, eligibility, etc) and they are fighting for your rights as law-abiding gun owners, even though you don't live in Utah.

There have been some problems with Utah processing time, as they have been slammed with applications, just like Texas. They have recently expanded the department (again) and say they are processing in less than 60 days now. (even for non-residents) Their goal is to process applications and issue permits within 30 days. They expect to be there before the end of the year, as soon as they catch up.

All in all, a very good class, and a good experience here in Salt Lake City. So, we are good to go for another 3 years!

Crossfire - Thanks for the update and the good news. I have my Utah CCW mainly as a "back-up" for my Texas CHL.

Actually, it costs them more to process the application than they charge for it. They only charge $35 for the license. The FBI charges them $30.25 to do the background check. Hence, the $65.25. I keep expecting them to charge more for the non-resident permit, but so far, they have not. And still, only $10 to renew.

:cheers2: Way to go, Utah. When I got my CFP I found the BCI was responsive to my inquiries, and professional in delivering the license on time. The BCI reflects well on their state.

I feel this may be a dumb question, but there may be a thread already that someone can point me to.

But what would be the purpose of getting a Utah CHL, or any other state's in addition to Texas'? I looked at the reciprocity map, and I'd gain 2, maybe three states that would reciprocate. For me, they are states I've never been to or plan to go to.

I'm not asking to knock the idea, but rather gathering data to see if I should get it myself.

It provides you an alternate CHL if you should happen to misplace your Texas CHL. Also, there are those that DO go to the additional states.

If you feel you don't need these added bonuses, then you probably don't need an additional CHL from another state.

It can also give you a buffer if your Texas CHL expires and you are late applying for your renewal or your renewal is delayed.

Interesting.

I also saw on the recip map on usacarry.com that I'd pick up Washington, Ohio and West Virginia.

People who don't travel outside the country don't need passports but they're useful for those who do.

Of course, I was trying to be clear that I was not knocking it. I just wanted to see if there was a reason I was not thinking of. That's all.
