A Short Barrel Shotgun is a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18 inches. A Short Barrel Rifle is a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.

Yes they are all NFA items with tax stamps..considered class 3 weapons as defined by the ATF..You have to file a form 1 via eforms if you have a trust and wait about 3-4weeks.. or send it off via snail mail if you have your Cheif LEO sign off on your form1 for the tax stamp to be approved..after everything gets approved, you can go ahead and start cutting away..

I knew that SBRs are NFA regulated, I know the minimum barrel length for rifles and shotguns to avoid requiring a tax stamp, but I just didn't know that SBSs were obtainable at all, even with a tax stamp. Other than things like divers' bang-sticks for shark defense, it simply never occurred to me that anyone would want a shotgun with a barrel of less than 18".

I understand the attraction of SBRs, and I wouldn't mind having one myself (although, as NFA items go, I am personally more interested in suppressors than SBRs). I guess I just don't get SBSs. Not trying to be critical, and hey....if that's what floats your boat, then rock on; but it just seems to me that other than conceal-ability there isn't any practical advantage to an SBS. Even SBRs begin to suffer significant loss of performance both in terms of terminal ballistics as well as accuracy as the barrel gets shorter and shorter. I guess in extreme CQB situations, short-barreled weapons can have some advantages.....spec-ops door-kickers use them, so obviously they think there is an advantage or they wouldn't use them.....but conversely, tens of thousands of marines and soldiers engaged in CQB very effectively in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 13 years using standard issue M4 carbines. So from my perspective.....and this is just MY opinion.....the primary justification for SBRs/SBSs is concealment...........followed by the fun factor.

Help me out....what am I missing?

you are correct in terms of better performance with a full length rifle or shotgun..to justify owning or making an SBS is of course for CQB situations and to get a slightly wider spread at a closer range if you decide to kill alot of bad guys in one room lol ..I also usually hunt hogs from the passenger side out of my window of my jeep, so drawing my vepr12 sbs out quickly through the window is whole lot better than drawing my 20" pump action shotgun..but other than those points ..it is just a cool fun toy with a very large flash and bang when you are at the range.. and also a good conversation piece..

When you hunt hogs that way, are you using slugs or shot?

buck shot or slugs..or winchester PDX Slug n Buckshot combined together

I just saw the youtube review now and this Vepr 12 caught my eyes. I think i want to have one

They are fun, but magazine costs are crazy.
