Independence brand 5.56mmx45

Post by OnceFired »

Hey all

Just went to the Bass Pro Shop here in Springfield, MO. This I guess is the 1st one, and the biggest? It's pretty huge alright.

I came across something there I hadn't seen before while browsing the ammo section. I found 5.56mmx45 rounds from a company named Independence, in a blue box with a white star on it.

It was the only 5.56 / 223 they had in stock, but they had boatloads of it. Probably 200-300 boxes there on the shelf.

It made me think "what's wrong with this brand?" when I saw it.

Any experience with it?

I've shot probably 30 boxes of that stuff without any issues. You can find it at Wal Mart, Cabela's and Academy.

It is Alliant - aka ATK, aka Speer/cci - actually aka Federal Cartridge Company according to http://www.pmddtc.state.gov/licensing/d ... idgeCo.pdf
. ( I find the ammunition company pea under the walnut shell game to be rather confusing.)

Rumors have Independence being loaded all over the world (CBC in Brazil, IMI from Israel) but it is factory, NATO standard stuff from the same folks who own that little plant up in Independence Mo called Lake City.

Buy it, :fire :fire :fire :fire :)

I had found info attributing Independence to Brazil, but that was several years old and not resolved, just an "I think" type comment. Thanks for clarifying it.

Any idea where it is actually shipped from? I am not too far from Independence, MO myself these days. Might have to make a field trip up there to see it for home school. :)

I'm researching ARs right now, but haven't even looked at what a box of 20, I guess, costs?

What price per box did it cost?

Thanks!

I've had it for $7 a box at Walmart and $10 at academy. Nothing wrong with the ammo, it's good stuff.

What is wrong with $30 per 100 rd of 5.56? It seems that the demand is still high. Prices did not drop yet.

It's basically Federal XM193, contracted out to Israeli manufacturers. It's great stuff, actually.

Overall, you should be seeing a return to "normal" levels by August. As most of you have already observed, availability and price are already coming down.

I recently purchased a couple of cases of it and have fired a few hundred rounds of it with no issues at all.

Dog pile. I've shot 5-6 boxes without any problems. Got it at Walmart at $7 for a box of 20 rounds.

If only 9mm will come back. You can find it at local gun shops but they want .50 per round for FMJ, no thanks.

I've been seeing more and more at Walmarts when I'm looking for .22, .223, and .45. It doesn't always last long, but I've been seeing it. I don't have anything that shoots 9mm.

I think it will take alot longer for ammo to come back to normal. Remember in 2008 when comrade Obama got elected? It took over a year for the ammo market to return to normal.

I agree, plus MAIG and others are starting another "big" push to vote on the legislation again. So I doubt August will see us return to previously normal levels. And I think the days of $.03 and $.04 per round .22 bulk are gone entirely.
