Suppressors are NFA restricted items and require a tax stamp issued by the BATFE before you may take possession of one from a SOT FFL. Someone more knowledgeable about the process should advise you regarding the specifics, but my understanding is the paperwork could take six months plus to get approval. I do not believe any restrictions exist or any pre-approvals are required in Texas for having the barrel threaded. I purchased a carbine which came threaded through a standard (non-SOT) FFL and nothing special was necessary.

Threaded barrel and brakes are not restricted. You have to buy the suppressor and pay for the $200 stamp application then wait the 6 months while it is processed. You also have to have your local chief of police sign off or set up a trust. I personally set up a trust through a lawyer. Research NFA trust for more info on that.

:iagree:

The best is to set up a trust.

Have a look here:

No permits required. You need a $200 tax stamp as others have stated. You will have to purchase the suppressor up front from an Class 3 dealers. The suppressor will stay with the dealer unitl the BATF has approved you transfer application (Form 4) and sent you the Tax Stamp. This part can take a while. I just got one back in about 6 months. Basically you send in the Form 4 and just forget about it for a while. Once the stamp is back the dealer will turn the suppressor over to you and its basically registered to you for life.

I agree with everyone else about the trust. If you really want to buy a suppressor then setting up a trust is the easiest way. If not the you have to get the Cheif Law Enforcement Officer (Sherriff in most cases) to sign of on the transfer. Depending on your County the Sheriff might not sign off. Supposedly that is in the works of being eliminated but until then if you register the suppressor as an individual you will need the CLEO signature.

I think they take the word stamp and convert it to permit.

I don't know what all the fuss is about either. You can buy the NFA Stamps on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NFA-Tax-Stamp-2 ... 257a5c37d7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Probably even more people think they are totally illegal for civilians to own. It's just lack of knowledge on the subject, influence from movies/Hollywood, and being told so by other "experts". My father Is a avid hunter and shooter. He had assured me my whole life that suppressors and machine guns were totally illegal. He is now educated on the subject but I don't think he totally believed me untill I showed him my suppressor. Advanced Armament has a great website (CAN U as in Can University)on the subject of how to legally own suppresors.

My last suppressor took 7 months to get back. I just plunked down $840 Friday for a .45ACP Osprey suppressor and in addition to the ATF I may be waiting several months to get it in to even start the paperwork. I am going with a trust this time so hopefully it might be a little faster. Basically if you buy now then you have a merry Christmas.
