Have wanted A Springfield Socom 16 for some time. Finally purchased one and took it to the range. Followed directions 8 clicks up on sight for 100 yards. First shot bullseye, wow I'm impressed. Second shot 1/4 inch off first!

I have never in my life had a rifle be that accurate that quik out of the box. My dad was laughing because he has allways said you can't beat the old school M1 Peep sights. My father shot an M1 Garand in the military. At 500 yards he shot a 495 out of a possible 500 with the same sights and rifle.

Would def recommend the Socom she is a Tac driver and no plastic parts to break! Pics will follow if I can fig it out.

Almost bought one of those instead of my AR, sweet rifles!

I have been through a half dozen AR's and still lusting for a SOCOM. I was talking with my buddy the other day about buying a few stripped lowers and doing a few more builds and he asked me when I was going to cough up enough dough to buy the SOCOM I have been talking about for years now. I think he convinced me to ditch the AR builds for one perfect riffle in my eyes. I'm torn between buying a SOCOM 16 or the SOCOM II. I really want the rail, but don't know that I need it. I know it will add weight and pointy edges to the rifle that is already so sleek and quick handling. But it also allows you to attach stuff to it and looks awesome as all get out. When I get one it will definitely wear a 1-4x optic of some sort. Maybe an Accupoint or the new Vortex Viper PST.

What are your thought on the 1-4x optic for that rifle?

I like the SOCOM looks but just cant get over the weight of the thing. It is rather heavy to lug about in battle all day IMO.

...they didn't have a choice back in that day...any lighter and it'd hurt too much on the good guy end of the gun...I've trained on both and would gladly carry the old heavy M14...to get the performance...

No, it's not a SOCOM, but it is also a tack driver. The Sadlak scope mount has a tunnel through it so that the peep sights can still be used. Mine is a "Loaded" model, and it came with National Match front and rear sights, National Match medium weight barrel, and National Match 2 stage trigger. The scope is a Super Sniper 10x42HD fixed power with mil-dot reticle and mil/mil adjustments.

The first time I ever shot it was before mounting the optics or the Karsden's cheek rest. I have deteriorating eyesight, but I still shot at a 10"x10" steel plate at 200 yards with it through the peep sights and was able to hit the thing at will. The rifle is not as accurate as my Remington 700, but if I had to get rid of all my rifles except one, I'd had a hard time choosing between the M1A and the R700. By the way, the all-up weight of the M1A is about the same as the all-up weight of my R700 (which has a 26" heavy barrel). It's really not that bad.

I've been wanting to buy one of these for years now...just too expensive. Maybe one day....

Its not much longer or heavier than a 16" AR10 when looking at Armalite's website.

SOCOM 16 w/ no rail is 37.25" in length and 8.8lbs, a 16" AR10 with collapsible stock and A2 sight post is 37.1" in length and 7.13. I have had an AR10 and though it felt a little beefy but I lust after a SOCOM and could care less about the weight. I like the more traditional rifle stock on it better compared to a pistol grip type of an AR also.

Recit sorry for long delay. The 1x4 optic would be nice but I really love the stk ghost ring with the tritium front sight. Cant go wrong either way. I bought this to lug aroung hog hunting and close qrtr rifle so I kept the stk sights.

I'm sure as much as he praised it they will let him keep it and a box of mags!

It is amazing how effective the muzzle brake on the SOCOM 16 is in controlling the recoil of the .308

But the recoil still looks pretty stout. I have a feeling Hickok45 is a good sized guy, I on the other hand am a 5.7ft. 190lb individual that looks like I might take a beatin from that rifle. It does not deter me from wanting one though, I have owned and shot several rifles in .308 and want another.
