Depends. What is your intended use?

May do a little skeet shooting, there's a real slim chance I could use it for duck hunting. It would see more use as a home defense shotgun and general target use at the range.

I prefer the 1100. I have 3, a 20ga mod choke, 20ga LW Imp Cyl, and a 12ga mod. I've never owned a 870 but have shot a few. For dove and quail hunting I just prefer the SA over the pump and I really like the light weight 20 when I do a lot of walking. For shooting clays it doesn't matter so much I spoze, just depends on what you get used to and like.

With my 1100's I just make sure I keep them reasonably clean and change the gas O ring when needed and they never let me down.

In either model you'll need different chokes for skeet and duck/goose gun. Either different barrels or a barrel with changeable chokes will work.

Neither. Get a Mossberg 500. If using with a standard stock and not a pistol-grip stock (which I assume you would be for intended uses you listed) the safety located on the tang of a Mossy is superior to the safety located on the trigger guard of a Remmy.

Of course, Mossy 500 vs. Remmy 870 is like starting a Glock vs. 1911 debate - I'm sure someone will strongly disagree .... *FLAME RESISTANT SUIT: ON*

better yet, if strictly a hunting/target shooting use, get a Benelli.

Well the price difference on the 870 vs 1100 is quite noticable, several hundred dollars.

I don't know if this makes a difference but I shoot lefty, always have. Right handed but left eye dominant, so I learned to shoot lefty at a young age.

If you only want the gun for hunting/targets then try a Browning BPS - bottom ejection. I owned one for a few years, great guns. Traded it because I wanted a dual-purpose home defense/clays gun with interchangeable barrels - and a short Browning barrel is a $300 accessory. The guns themselves ain't cheap either - $600 or so new, can be found for $300-$400 used. They are extremely well built as any Browning product.

But for a lefty, the bottom eject would seem to be a very nice feature. Don't know any other pump gun that has this. Remington, Mossberg, Benelli etc are all right-side eject - right into your face if you're a lefty.

I've shot a fair amount of shotguns, both pump and autoloader and never had any issues (yet) with shell ejection. didn't know if the safety or anything was more intended for a righty over a lefty on the Remingtons.

The autoloader(1100) would be an advantage on those doubles on the skeet field. But then again, I have shot skeet with guys with pumps and they made shooting doubles no problem. I own an 870 and have shot skeet with it, but since my skill level isn't up there with the aforementioned guys with pumps, I'd choose the auto.

Well, I have an 870, and several other pumps as well, so I am prejudiced to begin with. But what they told me when I was a little sprout was that all the semi-auto did was burn ammo. With the SA, if you miss the first shot, you almost certainly are going to miss with the second two, the inclination being to just get enough lead up in the air and you will certainly hit something. Having to take the time to shuck the shell slows you down enough to take the time to re-aim and think again about how much to lead, etc.

It may have just been my Dad rationalizing why we didn't have expensive semi-autos like my uncle did - but for most people that seems to work out that way. My uncle was a dead eye shot with his, but most folks I've hunted with who had semi-autos would not hit more, they just burned more shells. Plus - you just cannot beat that sound of jacking another round in, most comforting sound in the world.

I have both and the 1100 isn't my primary HD gun, the 870 is. The 870 is a lot easier to find a defense barrel for.

I would think the 1100 would be better for what you have described. I have shot skeet with guys that try and use a pump gun and you have to be very quick on the pump to get the second shot when shooting doubles. I have a semi-auto and an 870 and use my semi-auto for dove, duck, quail, pheasant and trap/skeet. Besides, I can get my 2, 3 or 5 shots quicker. I don't hit any more, but I go through shells quicker!!...

If money is a consideration then get the 870 or a Mossberg 500 can't go wrong with either. The 1100 or 11-87 will give you easier followup shots and softer perceived recoil. I have both an 1100 and a Mossberg 500 both are set up for home defense/3 gun. The Mossy has ghost ring sights and a factory extended mag. The 1100 has a 22" Vent rib barrel and a +3 mag extension giving me 7+1 capacity. Interchangeable chokes add to the versatility of the 1100.

Winchester 1300. It is much smoother than the 870,
