Who owns what? AK vs AR
I just bought a Hungarian AMD-65 today, and got to thinking: This is my 2nd AK. Because of familiarity and ammo, I think I'll stick to AKs. At this point in my life, I'm not sure I'll EVER own an AR variant.
So I was just curious what the rest of you were like. Questions to answer:
Do you own one type or both? Just AKs
Whats your favorite rifle to shoot out of those you own? I already took the AMD-65 to the range and LOVED how it shot.
Which one is your "go to" rifle if you need one in a bad situation? At this point, the AMD-65 again.

AR only for me because I'm new to the gun scene. When I establish myself after school I'll get an AK.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I have a Dedicated Technologies AR15 in 223. All of my pictures are on my other computer that doesn't want to boot up and I haven't taken time to educate it, so I'd love to show pictures but that'll have to wait.
For those interested I'll post a link to DT at the bottom. I have the fluted 20" ultra-match barrel with Custom integral compensator, Norrell's moly-resin on exposed barrel, standard stock dipped in Real Tree Camo, vented hand gurad, Jewel two stage trigger, Burris 3X9 scope, and a couple of other things I can't remember at the moment. This rifle will shoot way better than I can and even with that I've shot some amazing groups. I have pics of the targets too, on the other dang computer...grrrrrrrrrr. I'm certainly not a AR Aficionado but I have shot a few of them, this gentleman makes as fine of a precision shooting AR as one could ever find or want in my opinion.

I bought the AR for a varmint gun, I've just never learned to enjoy carrying and shooting it, even as great of a rifle as it is. My favorite, and I own 4 of them in different calibers from .17 Rem Center Fire, 22-250, 243, and 7mm Mag, is the Rem 700. They're all equipped with the same scopes and mounts. I have shot these rifles so much they feel like an extension of my arm...I hardly realize that I'm aiming either of them. So guess what my go to rifle is...I carry the 22-250 with me in my truck everyday. When I know I'm going hog killin I'll pick up the 7mm. It went to Alaska hunting with me in 1968 and has been my close friend ever since. Just as a point of interest, I still have a few boxes of the hand loaded ammo for the 7mm that I worked up and carried to Alaska with me in '68, with it I took a BC record class Grizzly, a moose that missed the record book by 3/4 point, Dahl Sheep, and Barren Ground Caribou...the ammo still shoots just as dependable now as they did then.

Last summer, I took it to Rosenburg. I bagged a 5 gallon bucket.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I have both. I still have the first AR I bought, a ban-era Bushy I got when I was 19. I have 2 others and have had a few more, sold 2 one here

I just recently got my first AK, a Romanian Draco pistol that I am in the process of SBRing.
I prefer to shoot the ARs, but if something where to hit the preverbial fan, I figure there will be a lot of 7.62x39 lying around.![Texas Flag :txflag:](./images/smilies/texasflag.gif)

So far, I'm the only "AK variants only" vote. Thats interesting.

I guess you had better go out and buy an AR then. ![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)

Not only NO, but HECK NO. Show me one thing that an AR could do better than my AK as a civilian defense rifle.Carry-a-Kimber wrote:I guess you had better go out and buy an AR then.

Not shoot through 20 people...
Not weigh as much...
Better supply of defense ammo (gold dots, TAP, etc)
I love the AK, and I have access to one, but the AR takes the win for patrol rifle, defense in my mind. If I was in the sandbox it MAY be a different story.

Chamber a round from a new mag without getting off target.74novaman wrote:Not only NO, but HECK NO. Show me one thing that an AR could do better than my AK as a civilian defense rifle.Carry-a-Kimber wrote:I guess you had better go out and buy an AR then.

Not shoot through 20 people: If theres a group of people I'm shooting at, maybe I'll WANT it to penetrate 20 people. (ie mob situations)
Not weigh as much: If the AK weights too much for you, man up and bulk up!
![thumbs2 :thumbs2:](./images/smilies/thumbsup2.gif)
Better supply of defense ammo: got me there....but all I can say is stock up! Because after Katrina, we've learned anyone who thinks they're going to get resupplied through the local PD or the national guard is dreaming.
I understand there are definite advantages to both systems. I think being a lefty honestly prejudices me towards the AK as well. Easier to operate as an ambidextrous system than an AR is (unless you have a stag arms lefty rifle).
I'm honestly ok with either system, just curious what people use.

A barricaded subject perimeter can take hours. My LMT Piston is relatively heavy. I wouldn't wanna go much more than what I've got when I'm rifle-in-hands for 4+ hours AND wearing a vest. It gets hot quick.74novaman wrote: Not weigh as much: If the AK weights too much for you, man up and bulk up!![]()
For real though....how often do non-soldiers find themselves shooting at a large group and want that much penetration? I like shooting our AK, and it has a great use, just not practical for my utilization, or IMHO a home defense rifle.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
Since I live in town, my "home defense" is my pistol. If I lived in the country my home defense go to would be my AK. Honestly, in my current home situation if I had an AR it wouldn't be my home defense weapon either.
I don't really see myself assaulting a barricaded position anytime soon, (or being assaulted) so not too worried about standoffs.
On an off topic note, good to see you back active on the forums gigag. I've missed your sense of humor.![thumbs2 :thumbs2:](./images/smilies/thumbsup2.gif)

Wow. I think I went to school with the dude in the yellow shirt.
Since I live in Houston, my home defense is a pistol and an AK.
