Mossberg 500

I built a Mossberg 500 with an AR-15 adjustable stock, side mounted shell holders, rail pump grip with a surefire light and grip, 18" barrel with heat sheild, sling...etc...etc.

The thing is, I built this shotgun for home defence, but I NEVER shoot it. I shoot clays all the time, but I use my other shotguns which are longer and have adjustable chokes. Is there a longer Mossberg standard barrel that has adjustable chokes that I can swap out at the range so I can actually shoot this shotgun?

It looks great, but it is never used.

Hello ... I'm not a shotgun expert but I have a Mossberg 500 for home defense (18" barrel). I too was interested in your question about longer barrels with choke tubes. I think I found a longer barrel with choke tubes at Cabelas. Check out:

Notice that the longer skeet or hunting barrels are $170 while the 18-inch defense barrel is only $90. Just some advice for those who don't already own a short-barrel Mossberg .... if you're buying a shotgun and want it for both sport shooting/hunting AND self-defense, but the gun with the long barrel on it, then buy the short-barrel separate. The guns cost abut the same whether the come with long or short barrel, but buying the second barrel is a big difference. Often the long-barrel shotguns are even less expensive than the "defense" set up guns with 18-inch barrels (go figure).

You might try to find an older Mossy with a C-Lect choke barrel on it. My mother has one of those, and you simply crank the end of the barrel to change the choke. Just Goggle Image Search "Mossberg C-Lect choke" and see what comes up. It is odd looking, but it works. A whole used gun may be more affordable than just a barrel. I found that out when I went looking for an 18" barrel for my 500. Finally ordered one from Midway when they were on sale for $80 in December, and it took until April for them to ship it!

Dude, take it shooting as it is.

I have a somewhat similar configuration, and I have taken it skeet shooting and hunting. It has taken plenty of doves and busted plenty of clays.



Also, if this is a gun you plan on keeping around for self-defense, you really ought to shoot it and run whatever kind of drills your range will allow. 3:00am under stress while your door is being kicked in is no time for familiarization with the gun your life is depending on.

Thanks for all the input. I really didn't want to pay 170 for a barrel (as I paid 189 for the shotgun in 1994). I have shot the shotgun plenty of times to be comfortable with it. I took a three day tactical shotgun course years ago. (enough rounds to have a nice bruise by day three!)

My other shotguns get really regular use...I just thought if I could find an inexpensive barrel (looked on the internet without much luck) I could just swap it out.

I guess it will be relegated to home defence.

The C-lect choke works pretty well - I learned to shoot clays with one (my dad had it on his Mossberg 500 too) - the common nickname for it is "Dial-a-duck"

THAT'S what it was called. I couldn't remember that name of it for the life of me. I could remember "C-Lect", but I knew it was also known as "Dial-something-or-other". Thanks for the reminder.

What the others said. I have the Maverick 88 and replaced the forend so it is like a 500 now and will replace it again with a different forend. Have the same Blackhawk stock. BTW, they work great to reduce recoil. Mine came with a 18" plain barrel. I wanted some better sights so found a 28" vent rib for $85 and had it cut to 18.5". Added Truglo fiber optics for vent ribs and make it so easy to see. But the 18" vent rib was $165. So as said, get the longer barrel and then find a shorter one for home defense. I lucked out big time as my neighber wanted a plain barrel 18" and had the 28" vent rib so we swapped. Now I have an 18.5" and a 28" with the choke both with vent ribs.

I have almost the EXACT same setup at home only it has pistol grips front and rear. I do have a synth stock that I've used from time to time.
The 18" barrel doesn't have that wide of a pattern so I wouldnt see why you couldn't use one at a range. I've put a couple hundred shells through it since getting the 18" barrel and it surprised me when I was able to hit targets at 30 yards. This was out in the woods tho, so range rules may be different.

This works fine for the 88, 500, and 535 - but keep in mind that some Mossbergs (the 835 for example) are backbored. If you cut it off you will have an approximately .800 bore at the muzzle. Talk about your scattergun... Course you could always take a hammer and smack it into an oval shape - anyone remember the "duckbill" guns?
