The above link is from the 1/10/10 Dallas Morning News.

The Army Corps of Engineers is running a lottery which will allow 44 hunters
who live within 50 miles of Lake Lavon, in Collin County, Texas to kill as many
feral hogs as they wish. Formerly only bows and arrows could be used. The winners
will be able to either trap the hogs in cages, or shoot them using shotguns.

This lottery is open until Friday, 1/15/10. Winners will be chosen Tuesday, 1/19/10.
The killing will be allowed from February 2010 through April 2010.

The article gave 2 websites about feral hogs:
http://www.hoghuntinghogs.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.texasboars.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As is typical of news reporting, they didn't cover the important question of what
the procedure or website was in order to enter this lottery. Those of you with an
interest will just have to poke around COE websites I guess.

44 winners will be chosen. As of the date of the article, 200 hunters have applied.

Jim:

If you feel like sharing, please post the procedures here for entering,
once you have determined them.

If you don't feel like sharing in order to up your chances of being one of the
lucky 44, let us know after the winners are chosen whether you won a slot.
The number of applicants was at 200, but now that it's been in the Snooze,
the publicity will up that by quite a few.

Good luck to you on winning a slot. This could be very interesting if you get
in and are able to participate in this. Keep us posted.

This one is better than the Grapevine Lake COE hunting which limited the
hunters to bows and arrows.

SIA,

I may be interested. However, I have 2 issues;
1) I need someone to take care of the downed animals.
2) I need to buy an nice shotgun

Does this indicate a reversal in the COE policy on good guys with guns?

Beiruty:

I have no idea whether you have to tote out the dead hogs,
or if you can just let them rot there for the vulturesto feast upon.

Whether it's COE or private property, does anyone know what the
SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is with regard to this?

Regarding the change of policy, it sure seems like the Lake Lavon
piece of the COE has liberalized their polices since you can use
shotguns instead of just bows and arrows.

Too bad it's only shotguns. This would seem to be prime time
to rock and roll with some EBR's. You'd be able to reach out and
touch someone at much greater distances.

This is from the COE's Lavon website:

The Lavon Lake Staff would like to notify the public of a special hog hunt at Lavon Lake.

Certain areas of the lake will be broken into sections of approximately 400-600 acres with permitted hunters having access to designated areas. In hopes of reducing the population of hogs, we will allow permitted individuals special methods/access to public lands from February-April.

Applications will be accepted in person from 28 Dec. 2009 to 15 Jan. 2010, during normal business hours, at the Lavon Lake Project Office. Applicant selection will be by random computer drawing on Jan. 19, 2010.

Contact a Park Ranger at 972/442-3141 for more details.

I don't know about SOP, ethically anyone killing an animal just to "leave it rot there for the vulchers to feast upon." is a slob hunter. There are lots of hungry people who would love to have the meat if you don't.

To hunt, I assume you need to use slug in a shotgun. Do you need rifled barrel? only Sabot slugs will do?

Not necessarily slobs. I know quite a few hunters that bring home deer, fowl, etc but leave feral hogs to the carrion lovers. I have been told that the hogs meat isnt very good and there are way too many of them as they breed fast.

The few I've taken have tasted just fine.

As far as "slob hunter", comments like that come from folks that have no realization what damage that these menaces cause. :waiting: People that think bugs, mice, moles, etc., are pests for some reason don't want to think that same way about feral hogs simply because they are larger? :confused5
