Is it worth the money? Nearly 2 grand.

$1995 or whatever is just retail. I often see them selling for $1500 or less. There was a person on this forum selling a couple of them for $1350 each (not sure if they are still available).

Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of rifle for the price. But, I have heard that they are still working out some of the bugs in the system. Caveat emptor and all that, I suppose. I have yet to shoot one myself but I think a buddy of mine may be leaning towards one so as soon as I can get my grubby mitts on one I'll post up some sort of review.

American Rifleman had an article on one this month, they loved it (but when was the last time they hated a gun?), they said no malfunctions and around 1 1/2" MOA. I think for a grand more I'd get the FN SCAR in 308, but that's just me

One of our dept's firearms gurus said he was seeing reports coming in of frames cracking (in the upper I believe). They look good, I've handled a few and the was not blown away.

For the money you can get an LMT or hold out for the civilian HK version due soon if you want a piston driven system. LWRC has some great rifles as well.

I agree that the LMT, the H&K MR556 and the various LWRC rifles are extremely nice, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find one at quite the same price point as the Ruger SR556. This is not at all a knock on the previous three examples, it's just a testament to how high they are held in esteem.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Magpul Masada/Bushmaster ACR. Word around the campfire is that it will retail in the $1500 range. But I digress!

I saw mention that S&W was starting to sell a piston AR model as well.

Also Sig is shipping their 516 which is a piston operated AR rig.

This is about consistent with the Short Stroke Piston ARs these days. My advice instead of getting a Ruger AR, buy an LWRC for the same price. LWRC is used by the government and is a tested AR-15. One of the best AR-15s on the Market.

Daniel Defense just put out a new AR. It's a DI system but has had amazing reviews. I've handled one but haven't fired it (other than dry).

It's 20% cheaper than my nosebleed favorites but almost just as good I'm sure.

I'm not big on piston AR's. Many of them still have carrier tilt problems, eating away at the receiver extension.

For that amount, if you want a piston gas system I'd go with an XCR. It was at least designed around a piston gas system rather than cramming a piston gas system into something built around DI.

Personally I've never shot one. It seems to be well made though, albeit a little heavy IMHO. I like the Troy BUIS and rail system too. I think for the price, you're getting a nice gun with quality add-ons.

There is nothing "wrong" with DI guns though. You can always add an aftermarket Adam's kit to any AR if you want a piston.

It really boils down to how much you want to spend on something. There are definitely advantages of a piston gun over a DI (less heat and less fouling into your upper). If I had the extra cash I'd look into an piston gun like an LWRC. For the prices of some pistons guns though, you could get a DI gun with optics and come in well under retail for some. For $2400 for some LWRC models, we can build you a fully custom gun with a piston Timney trigger, free float rail and optics for around or under that cost (depending on the rest of the build).

Nice. I really want one of those Robinson XCR SBR's.

The Ruger is a great gun. I think it's heavy for me, but most Rugers are unbreakable. As for the price, you aren't going to get an HK for that price (a little while ago that's about the price their piston uppers are going for), but you can get almost anything else. If you like the Ruger, go for it. The price is good, when you break it down (about $1000 for the base rifle, $400 for a piston system, $300 for the rail system, and about $100-$200 for the flip up sites).

I would personally, buy two different rifles for that price.
