I bought a Savage/Stevens Model 200 in .308 this weekend.
I need to put a scope on it.
I don't know anything about scopes.
I'd like to do some distance shooting, possibly out to 500yds or farther eventually.
I'd like to keep the cost of the scope below $300 with rings.
Any advise will be appreciated.

Re: Scope Advise
Well, the rifle is only a $300 rifle to begin with so I don't want to put a thousand dollar scope on it. This will probably end up in the hunting rifle category soon, but I'd like to be able to shoot it out to at least 400yds.
Once again, Im new to the rifle scene besides my .22's.

Re: Scope Advise
I think Im going to settle for a 3-9X40. That seems to give me the most bang for my buck.
Now, time to pick a brand.
Choices will most likely be Burris, Barska, Leupold, or Nikon.

The .308 cartridge is good at more than twice that distance - in the right hands with the right rifle. That being said, I don't think you're going to find 400-500 yard shooting very satisfying or easy with a $300 rifle, even on a firing range. 400-500 yards is not anywhere near as easy as you think it is, particularly if you're not willing to invest in really good optics. And taking a shot at those distances at live game with anything other than an accurized rifle with a really good scope is irresponsible - in my opinion.flb_78 wrote:Well, the rifle is only a $300 rifle to begin with so I don't want to put a thousand dollar scope on it. Re: Scope Advise
Here is a video you should watch on a Barska scope. The scope runs $400 .

The video is by George Hill of MadOgre.com and WeTheArmed.com. I have never met the man in person but I tend to trust his judgement.

Smith's site has a ton of good information on it.AndyC wrote:I found a great primer from an acknowledged authority on long-distance shooting - Zak Smith.
