Only thing I don't like is the fact many of the barrels are 1/9 twist instead of 1/8 or even 1/7

The 16" M4 one has the option to change to a 1/7 Chrome bore...but not any of the rest

Get that kit..go to a gun show and get a good $100 lower and POW!!!

Has anyone ever built an AR...how hard is it?

And for once and for all can someone explain to me in black and white what effect does the twist rate actually do?

Some people say the 1/9 cant stabilize heavier rounds?!?

I would LOVE to build my own black rifle but don't know where to start

Would I only need a stripped lower then? If so, this is one heck of a deal. I have to be missing something. If I can save $300+ going this route, I can get an AR I can then afford to add after-market optics and lights to!

Yes..by what the kit shows it comes with everything..including the guts of the lower

I looked online and I saw DPMS stripped receivers going for as low as $115, a local gunshow you might be able to find a decent stripped lower for less and skip the shipping.

Cool thing is..without the lower..they can ship the entire shebang to you no problems (no FFL required)

Out of tolerance headspace can allow the brass to stretch too far when fired..it ruptures and blows hot gas/metal back in your face...worse case scenario it blows your chamber to pieces!

This is why you see those ruptured case extractors out there

I have assembled an AR-15 lower from a stripped receiver and a lower receiver parts kit from Brownells. I found excellent step by step instructions online on one of the AR-15 forums. The work took me about 1.5 hours with very simple hand tools (punches, small hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, etc.). There was nothing exotic about it. The readily available military armorer manuals are also a great source of information on assembly details.

Assembling an upper is more complex and requires specialized tools to properly install the barrel in the receiver(receiver clamps, barrel vises, torque wrenches, etc. which would add significantly to the cost if you don't already own them). Buying the upper receiver fully assembled and test fired is the easy way to deal with that and still have a rifle you partially built yourself for a very reasonable cost. Brownells, Stag Arms, DPMS and Bushmaster are good sources for assembled uppers. They can also be found at very good prices at almost any gun show.

I too am very interested in these kits. I was looking at an Evil Ak cause I did not want to afford an AR just yet. But in this case...Can other give any knowledge they have on this company as far as quality and service. The reviews on the site are all positive but who ever posts bad reviews...

I've bought a stripped upper from them, and it was very good quality. I'm planning on getting one of their kits to do a new AR build hopefully soon.

I built an AR with a DPMS stripped lower, a DPMS lower kit and a Del-ton upper. I used the directions from AR 15.com. It took me about 3 hours to build but then I am not very mechanically minded. I have put about 400 rounds through it with no problems. Like most of my guns, it is more accurate than I am.

I assembled my lower from some instructions on the AR15.com forum. They have illustrated, step-by-step instructions on how to do it using only normal household tools, and a little extra care. I think I used a hammer, a pair of needle-nosed pliers, a small screwdriver, and some masking tape. They say that it should take about 45 minutes, but it took me a little over an hour.

Personally when it comes to buying things (bikes, cars, electronics, firearms etc) I've found that you really get what you pay for. There are exceptions to any rule. I've fired low quality AR's and top quality AR's. The ones from Del-Ton are probably OK quality, much like Olympic AR's. They'll probably shoot fine and hopefully you'll never have any issues. My cheapest AR is a Colt HBar post ban that I got for about $850 (10 yrs ago) and the most expensive is about $2600 custom built rifle. The main difference in feel between the 2 is the sweet Chip McCormick 2-stage trigger on the custom rifle compared to the mil-spec one on the Colt. Of course there are other cosmetic things and all the tacticool accessories, but the gist of the story is they both work. IMHO, if you do get this lower cost rifle, invest in a nice trigger for it later.

For a couple hundred extra dollars you can have a better quality rifle already built for you (unless your a DIYer and have the tools and time needed). Here's a link to a CMMG that has been on other threads:

I have an AR with a 1:9 twist. It shoots 69 grain Matchkings into tiny groups all day long. What's wrong with a 1:9 twist?
