Well if we have a C&R FFL they were selling a crate of 20...91/30's for $1129

7.62x54R is fairly cheap..you just have to really search around for it...old stuff is corrosive so make dang sure you scrub the bejesus out of the barrel to keep it from pitting

Oh there are also a few cool things you can do to make it a bit more accurate

I found that doing about 4 hours of real hard work cleans up these old beat milsurp rifles to darn good condition

Build you a load of ''Ed's Red'' Bore Cleaner
Strip the rifle, put the reciever in a bucket of the stuff..using a bore brush and patches scrub the everloving bejesus out of the barrel..spend maybe 45-60 min doing this..it WILL strip all the goop out of the barrel/rifling

Get a 410 bore brush from wally world, if you have a flex head assembly for your drill then cool..if not get one! Use the .410 bore brush and some ''Ed's Red'' and drill polish the chamber...the biggest complaint about the Mosin is after firing a few rounds the bolt sticks and it takes a 2x4 to kick the bolt loose to extract the round...well years of cosmoline and funk build up in the chamber causing it to stick to the casing, also clean the snot out of the bolt rails

once you do that..the Mosin will become a darn good rifle for very cheap!

I really wanted to get a crate of those, strip them down and then parkerize them and fix the stocks like I did with my old Ishapore Enfield...I truly believe if you revitalize an old milsurp rifle it doubles it quality, not damages it..other than a historic value

I picked one up Sunday at Cheaper Than Dirt. On sale for $89.00. M91 , good looking rifle. I need to order ammo & get to the range with it.

I might have to go check them out tomorrow. I've been looking for a 91/30, I wonder if they have any more? It would save me having to buy online then pay shipping and ffl fees. Although the one online says they are like new/ unissued. I just want something cheap to have some fun with, just an added bonus that it has some history to it.

I took my father's "new" M39 out to Hotwells on Sunday the 17th and shot it for the first time. It's really nice-shoots better than either our 91/30 or M44. I did have a curious gentleman ask me what it was-he thought the idea of an early-40's vintage surplus rifle pretty interesting. Me also shot my father's new-to-him marlin 1894 and my little brother's brand-new Marlin 30-30. My 35 Whelen is actually there right now waiting for sheryl to shoot it in for me

this was the first rifle my eleven year old has ever fired... i put my hand behind his shoulder just in case he took a spill.....My son is a bad dude. Start hard, finish hard,...he was complimented by the range master who said..." I've seen bigger men shoot poor with smaller rifles"...dad of the year award goes to me...I breed excellence.

P.S. he can also strip the rifle completly, down to the bolt complete breakdown(and then re-asemble)...thats hard to do for a little guy.

Yep went to the cheaperthandirt store today to check it out and just happened to have a 91/30 follow me home. You just can't beat a good rifle for $96.34 out the door. Much better than paying shipping and FFL fees. They didn't have the cheapest ammo though 20 rds for $27. Figured I pick up some ammo some where else. The regular price for M44 and 91/30 says is $99. Still not a bad deal. Can't wait to get a chance to shoot it. And does anyone else have some difficulty putting the bayonet on? My dad has my grandpa's collection he brought back with him from WWII so this is my first time to own a old mil surplus gun. If any one is thinking about getting one, you just can't go wrong for 100 bucks.

Heh. Less than a decade ago, you could get 5 for a hundred. Three for a hundred was available less than 5 years ago.

I don't like Mosins all that much, but I wish I'd stocked up.

The M95 Steyr and M95/34 are still pretty cheap, considering their limited issue and relative scarcity on this side of the pond. Ammo is available, if you don't mind Nazi-marked ammo from 1934.

I have a 95/34 (major shoulder punisher!) and a bunch of ammo. Fun to shoot, but it's in the safe for a rainy day if the market would ever catch up.

The trick is to lightly sand the inside of the bayonet connector with a fine (220 or so) grit sandpaper. That will loosen the fit just enough that it'll go on.

The bayonets were made to go on and never ever come off, thus the extremely tight fit.

Ah it works so much better now, it wouldn't even go on without feeling like i needed to hammer on it. Now it slides on and tightens up just before you twist it to lock it. Thanks the help.

I gave one to my father in law for father's day. He carries it in his ranch truck. He has a 6th generation working cattle ranch outside of Mullins

I witnessed a new use for the surplus 180 gr stuff with him. He was installing an underground tank for fuel storage with a backhoe on one his back sections, and ran into a large bedrock he couldn't get a grip on with the bucket......he shot it with 5 rounds of the yellow tipped surplus ammo and chipped it enough to get a bite of it with the backhoe bucket.......5 shots shattered a hole as large as a basketball, a couple of feet deep in solid limestone.

Not much of a need for that here in downtown Austin, but still impressive.
