I do think you are limiting yourself with the $1200 limit, but that is your choice.

I have a PTR-91. It is a good, decently accurate, and reliable rifle, but the recoil is worse than most other semi-auto 308 and I would not recommend scoping it without very good eye relief. The other post above was correct in that they will eat nearly any 308 ammo.

I know a guy with a DPMS. It is a decent shooter, but I am not sure about 300 to 400 yards. It also tended to choke on surplus. Does fine with new ammo or good reloads.

I have been eyeing the Palmetto State Armory uppers. They have been putting them on sale here and there lately. I don't have an AR-10 myself.

Personally, I don't place the price of a semi-auto .308 in the same range of a basic .223. My utility, go-to-for-everything rifle is a POF .308 purchased a few years ago. Out of your described price range, but I think a .308 semi-auto purchase deserves more funding than a basic AR-15. Just sayin'.

One more thing. Assault rifles, by definition, are select-fire. There are no assault-type rifles. There are only sporting rifles or military rifles.

+1 on the POF 308. It's my dream rifle; will never let it go while I'm alive.

These usually run in the $2400 to $3000+ depending on what you have installed on the platform. Generally, with many pistols and rifles, you get what you pay for. There are exceptions, but a quality build or buy will cost you more. In this case, likely more than you've allowed for.

I love my .308. I tend to stick to bullets in the 150 grain range. Getting up into the high 170 and 185 grain range hurts my shoulder after a bit.

A 308 modern sporting rifle is a worthy aspiration. Best of luck.

How much to the FAL rifles go for? I was thinking there are decent new versions in the $1200 range.

I picked up an Armalite AR-10 the day before Sandy Hook happened for $1500 - I love this rifle, haven't been able to try shooting beyond 50yds yet, but is accurate and easy to get back on target when not shooting from a rest. I picked the .308 caliber for a variety of uses from medium to large game and, if the need arises, long range.

I have a 1.25-4x40 scope on it, would like to get a 3-9 or 5-20x50 scope at some point.

The only gotcha is most of the AR-10 rifle parts are not interchangable between different manufacturers - I can't use PMag's so I am stuck with only Armalite mags, but that was my choice after looking into it.

It's basically an AR-10, really a Bushmaster .308 waiting for optics to be added. It's heavy to lug around but it's been pretty reliable. I shoot 150 and 180 grain (mostly 180) bullets and use it to hunt hogs.


Actually, This year I replaced the EOTech sight with a Photon NV scope but I don't have a photo handy of that set-up.

This is a stock image of my DPMS, I have only had it out to 200yds(scope came loose an ran out of bullets) but was getting 1 MOA with a cheap scope and bad eyes and as a cheap plug it is for sale, there is a post on here somewhere.

With your budget you can find an FNAR and get decent optics for it. It is one of the most accurate 308 semi's out there. The down side is the mags are a bit pricey. I owned one but sold it to help fund my SCAR, I really liked the rifle and without modifications it is more accurate than the AR platform although a bit heavier.

Not normally where I'd bring this up, but figured some of you might be looking...and it's a pretty specific item. Primary Arms in Pearland has 7.62x51 Magpul PMAG LR/SR GEN M3 windowed magazines, 25-round capacity, on sale right now for $17.99. These have become widely available again, finally, but the best price I'd found elsewhere was $21.80; they're $22.95 direct from Magpul. Yep, there's sales tax in Texas, but that'll come to, give or take, about $1.44 per mag, so still not a bad deal. I ordered several more as an early Christmas present to myself.

Note, though, that if you do benchrest or shooting from a low bipod, the extra length on these mags may make them unsuitable for that purpose.

I'am looking for a 308 semi-auto rifle - recommend some good ones below the $800 price range.

After doing some internet searches, I came across the Cetme 308. If anyone here has a Cetme 308, please post your experiences. Several years ago I owned an H&K SP89, so the safety and charging of the Cetme should not be new. for some reason, part of the Cetme design looks just like an H&K.

The ideal rifle would be something like the Springfield Armory M1A or Scout A1. but I do not have $1,400 to drop on a rifle.

There is the remington model 750 woodsmaster. But there is not much of a price difference between the remington 750 and the Cetme 308. And the Cetme 308 accepts large capacity magazines, while the 750 does not.
