If your optic ever goes down (think "battery", "broken lense", etc.), you'll still have the ability to aim your carbine. Even though I've got an ACOG that requires no batteries, I still have BUIS.........just in case. Without them, all you can do is "point" your weapon. You cannot AIM it.
Not just your sights can go down either. Was on a hunting trip last fall with a buddy of mine and the mount on the scope on his AR-10 failed. No BUIS on his rifle so we ended up moving the scope from my 1895 to his rifle leaving me with the stock Marlin irons. Which reminds me that I need to do something about the 1895....(That scope is now living on my MAK-90). The Marlin sights work, but not well for my eyes.

I know that part of it is my age, but I still think that young shooters should be proficient with iron sights before being allowed to shoot with optical sights.

BTW, good job on your "guitar case".

Thanks. I've been looking around on CL for another soft case to make another one. Thinking I will get one slightly bigger so I can fit more things in like extra mags and a pistol + mags. I tried it on the current on but there just isn't any room without having to go all the way to the edge of the case. Overall, I am happy with it being my first firearm related DIY.
