.45 Colt .357 mag or .44 Mag

I'm a big fan of the .45 Colt, chambered in a revolver from Ruger and a Rossi 92. With these two, I can go from "bunny" loads all the way up to, and slightly past, standard .44 Magnum loads (made somewhat easier by the fact that I handload). Makes the cartridge useful for everything from plinking to varmints to medium-sized game. You can do this with the .44 as well, but there's just something "neat" for me in running what's essentially a 140 year old cartridge through that kind of power, and utility, scale.

Note: Please do NOT try running "heavy" or "hot" loads through your SAA! While you might not actually "blow up" your gun, you -will- damage both it, and possibly your own hand!

I had the Henry. Loved the look but hated the loading tube. Also hated the weight of the octagon barrel. Like carrying around a 4ft crowbar!

So, I ended up selling to to a Forum member (who loves it) and I bought a new Rossi M92, 16" Stainless Model R92-56018. Price around 500-525 if you can find one.

Carlson1 just picked up a new one of the same model for a killer price. Maybe he will comment here as well.

Still got the "Bling" but with the standard loading gate and light enough to carry all day. I tried to find a Umberti but they are harder to find than the Rossi (and cost much more as well). The 1892 action is the strongest made in a lever gun. And there are many customizations that can be made to these Rossi's that turn them into a snot slick, light trigger carbine.

I have found one online and also one with a 24" octagon barrel or a 20" round barrel. Any particular reason you went with the 16 inch?

.44 Magnum because.............that's what I already own.

.357 magnum is a good round, but it will be necessarily limited compared to the .44 magnum. The .45 LC can be loaded up into "standard pressure" .44 magnum territory, but then it is at its limit, while the .44 can be made even hotter.......or loaded down to .44 Special territory. I think that makes the .44 Magnum the more versatile chambering. Plus, if you're shopping for commercial ammo, I think you'll likely have an easier time finding .44 magnum on the shelves than .45 LC, and probably on a par with finding .357 magnum ammo.

I wanted the 16" for light/easy/quick handling. The 16" is still more than enough barrel for .357 to reach it's peak.

.44 Magnum for me. I have the Ruger Redhawk and Henry Golden Boy both in .44 magnum. Just got back from shooting with some new friends from England. They asked if they could shoot handguns, so I took both my Glock .45's, but also took the Henry, M&P15-22, and Colt M4. They insisted they only wanted to shoot handgun until I took the Henry out of the case. They were all over it. They thought the Colt and M&P were okay, but really liked the Henry. I guess even those Englanders got a little cowboy in them.

I recently bought a Rossi 1892 lever gun in 357. Love it. I now have an order in (back ordered) on a Rossi lever in 454 casull. That would be a fun one especially if matched up with a redhawk in 454. I've heard you can shoot 45 colt in the 454 lever gun. If I could only choose one it would probably be 357.

Some years ago I bought a Winchester 94 Trapper in .38/.357 Magnum, 16" barrel, to go with the GP100 I already had. It is light, compact and enough firepower to handle just about anything within 100 yards or so, short of bears, although it takes awhile to reload.

I think this made an ideal combination for Get Outa Dodge scenarios, at least when I was young and healthy enough to actually get. The rifle was unquestionably California legal, when EBRs were thought to be forbidden, before the invention of the bullet button, and likely will be legal even after the super majority Communists Legislature and Moonbeam do their thing shortly.

I hope to be back home before that.

I've come to the conclusion that the .44 mag is the best all around. You can shoot a wide variety of boolits/weights, and load 'em anywhere from mild to wild.
But.... If you don't reload, the .44 certainly ain't the cheapest way to go.

I absolutely love the versatility and the amount of varying bullets for .45 colt (.452"). You can shoot supersonic 200gr, or up to 360gr massive slugs. Modern rifles chambered in this round are capable of CUP near that of .45-70. You can sling a 300gr at 2200fps if you want, just be careful.

I love .45 colt. I love the versatility of it with modern powders. I have a winchester "saddlegun" 16" chambered in it now, but I am looking for a marlin 1894 cowboy in it for a scoped hunting rifle, with just a touch less recoil than my 1894 guide gun (.45-70).
