My Newest Creation (AR-308)

Howdy,

Ive been working on this build over the last couple months and I wanted to share it with ya'll. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Parts have been a little scarce but I was able to scrounge up what I needed, even an elusive RRA two stage trigger (CTD). I want to go on record as saying the Fulton stripped upper and lower as well as the JP enhanced bolt were things of beauty in flawless fit and finish. The upper was so tight where the barrel extension goes it barely fit in. It wouldn't wiggle at all even without the barrel nut on. The finish on the lower and barrel is Alumahyde II Earth Brown. I have a busy week so will be unable to break it in until the next. I shall post my results.

Seriously, though, what's wrong with the PRS stock? I really am thinking about putting one on my LR308, but there are other things I'd rather get first so I haven't really started looking into it.

There's not a thing wrong with the PRS. The UBR (Utility/Battle Rifle, 1.46 lb) is primarily aimed at the carbine market where the weight of the stock is important, while the PRS (Precision Rifle/Sniper, 1.68 lb) is designed for rifles where the weight of the stock is not going to be a problem. The UBR gives the carbine user adjustability similar to the PRS without the PRS's weight. They are good stocks, and someday I'll put one on my carbine. They are also quite expensive, so it will be a while.

I have a SASS .308 also which I posted about not too long ago (viewtopic.php?f=23&t=52914" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). The AR10 platform is already significantly heavier than the AR15. Add to it a full length rail system (mine is a Troy Battle Rail) and a heavy barrel (mine is a 18" Noveske, 1:10 polygonal rifling), and they are quite "front-heavy." The PRS stock is heavier than the UBR. The all up weight of your rifle will be a bit lighter with the UBR, but the balance point of the weight will be more favorable with the PRS.

All of that said, VERY nice rifle TheMilkMan. Let us know how it shoots. Out of curiosity, what did the DPMS barrel set you back? I bought my AR10 with the Noveske barrel already mounted, but I'm not convinced that polygonal rifling is the way to go for this application and I may want to rebarrel down the road.

Also, unless you've already ordered your scope, take a good look at the SWFA 5-20x50mm scope (http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-5-20x50-Tactica ... 51642.aspx). I had a chance to compare mine against high end Leupold and IOR scopes before buying, and it was clearly superior. I'm really happy with it, and the price is right.

Also, thanks for the scope recommendation TAM. I'll have to check one out. It will be a while before I purchase a fancy new scope as I don't want to push the limits of my wife's blessings.

I picked up the DPMS 18" SASS barrel at Midway USA for $250. I read up a lot on it before making the purchase. People report stellar accuracy, especially with heavier bullets. The max range I was imagining shooting was 700 yards, so the 18" bbl should hopefully make that happen. One tip is not to try to order it direct from DPMS. I tried that first and waited so long that it came back into stock at Midway, and I canceled my order from DPMS. The nice man at DPMS said it could have been a few months.

Lastly, I didn't mean any ill will towards the PRS stock. They are perfect for a non-weight issue weapon, and can be carried in the field too with a little effort. I chose the UBR for the reasons that: a) I have secretly coveted them since they were released based purely on design and looks b) They take a little weight off and are less bulky (the Slash XH buffer fills in on the weight department) c) they lock up as tight as a one piece stock. If anyone were to buy a PRS I know they wouldn't be disappointed. It all comes down to the range report, but it sure is pretty until then.

Good looking rig. I'm not a big fan of rail systems to but to each his own. Mine started out with that barrel, but I'd check the head space if you haven't already, mine was short and caused all kinds of failures. But it was alright I just swapped it for a Fulton 6.5 Creed barrel.

It passed the go-no-go test, but it does seem a bit tight. I could easily imagine one being reamed a hair too shallow and screwing the tight tolerance up. I had contemplated going with a Krieger, but I thought I would take a stab at this, since reports are good and the price is right. I suppose one runs a risk with any standard factory barrel, that there will be a few lemons. At least if it doesn't work it is heavy enough to beat my target into a pulp of wood and paper.

My barrel was installed by Noveske at Noveske, and they machined the receiver for the extended feed ramps while at it.
