A New (cheap) .22

#1

Post by firstmosin »

Hello. I'm looking for my second gun. I turned 18 and bought a mosin for my first rifle. I love it, but the ammo is getting way too expensive (I like to go at least every other weekend). I also want to introduce a girl who was slightly afraid of guns to shooting and I have a feeling the mosin would be a very bad start.
I looked at the 10/22 and I want something a bit cheaper. Something around $100. I looked at the Marlin 60, but don't like the tubular magazine(too easy for new people to laser themselves and I want to put in their heads that that is NOT EVER ok ).
I read something about a mossenberg, but couldn't find it.

Perhaps they were talking about the Plinkster. I believe Academy carries it.

There's a standard version that runs a lot closer to the $100 target.

I've been looking around and the mossberg plinkster and Marlin 795 are about the same price any reccomendations?

Edit from what I've been reading the Marlin 795 seems to be the way to go.

I don't why you don't like the tubular magazine.

I love my little Marlin 60 and my Spee-D-Loader.

If the Mossberg that you're talking about is the AR-looking plastic Mossberg .22 that Cabelas had on sale for $99, then save your money. Cheap looking and feeling.

I have the marlin 795! and love it. only downfall is the hard to find locally mags for it. everyone thinks its the savage and I've heard good things on them also. and believe locally mags are alittle more available. but still unlike the 10/22 where you can find anything for them. but for the price i would most defiantly recommend the 795! i have my open sights sighted in where i was giving real good competition against a 10/22 with a scope at 50 yards on one of the swinging trees. i got bored and wanted to have fun so know it looks like a mini sniper rifle, it contains a 3x9x40 scope and a bipod. :headscratch i know over kill but! :thumbs2:

Hit the pawn shops. Old .22lr rifles should be $100-150. Or, put a want ad on this forum. It's worked for me.
