Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
I have a AR15 (s&W M&P15t) and want another ( Colt 6940 maybe, I am happy with s&w and I know many otherARs to be just fine but I just want to say I have a colt) but also want a AR10 or some .308 Win maybe a bolt action for long range applications. I have a 7mm Rem Mag bolt gun that would serve this purpose as well but dont have much ammo and dont want to spend the $$$ on 7mag ammo that I could be putting into another more desirable platform, if thats the way I go. I have lots of ammo and magazines for my AR15, enough to outfit a 2nd AR. I would like a 2nd AR15 that my wife or member of my a problem arises party could use. The 5.56 ammo stash is plentiful and the recoil is low, perfect for a force multiplier gun.
From a practicle/ strategic standpointwhich should have priority the 2nd AR15 or AR10? (I probably already know the answer to this question?) I know I should get the 2nd AR and stock up on 7mm ammo but I really want the .308
Need Recommendations on: Which AR15? AR10?(bolt instead?) Keep 7mm or stock up on 7mm ammo.
In any case I will eventually get another ar15 and 10. I just hope I can afford to get them all before a problem arises/TEOTWAWKI.
So many guns, so little money.

I'd say go for the AR-10. This gets you flexibility in ammo, should you have to start scavenging for it after the zombies arise. BTW, Colt is introducing a .308 AR of their own. I forget the model (SP something, I think), but IIRC they'll be making uppers for it in a multitude of additional calibers, including 5.56mm. If it's reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced, it might end up being "the one gun to rule them all".

AR pattern in 308, but I'd recommend the DPMS LR308 over the Armalite AR-10. The LR platform seems more flexible - you can get 20rnd PMAGs that fit the DPMS and it's easier to source aftermarket and OE replacement parts for the DPMS than for the AR.
I used to have an Armalite AR-10, but sold it and bought an LR308, which I am much happier with.

I recommend the AR10 also. The primary difference (there may be others) is that the Armalite requires a proprietary magazine. The DPMS lower accepts magazines from other manufacturers than their own, including the PMAGs, which are superior and affordable magazines.Dave2 wrote:Forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference?Skydivesnake wrote:AR pattern in 308, but I'd recommend the DPMS LR308 over the Armalite AR-10. Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
Sell the M&P and get a Colt 6920 or 40. Problem solved. Then get the .308 AR of your choosing... or I would also look into building an EBR clone (Mk 14 mod 0) with the Troy kit off of the Garand platform. While familiarity of platform with the bigger bore AR may be nice, the EBRs are great and may satisfy and additional itch.
I want a semi .308 bad, but can't justify the moolah now. I'll be debating between the OBR, the EBR clone, or a piston platform (HK, POF, LWRC, FN SCAR). Then you have to pick glass for it...sight...

Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
THIS. Most 308 ARs require proprietary parts but there is a much better selection for the DPMS platform. My wife bought me an AR-10 for Christmas last year and I returned it for a Bushmaster ORC .308 (DPMS based), then I added some "stuff" and built a second upper. If I were to do it again I would just build the entire gun instead of having spare parts laying around.Skydivesnake wrote:AR pattern in 308, but I'd recommend the DPMS LR308 over the Armalite AR-10. I think for the price of the HK, POF, SN, LWRC...I would throw all those in the mud for an OBR. The OBR is just pure TCB (takin care of business).gigag04 wrote:Sell the M&P and get a Colt 6920 or 40. I tend to agree with you. Since I get married this weekend, there will be a myriad of new designs by the time I can drop the coin on any of the above. I'll still have to do my due diligence before I buy.RECIT wrote:I think for the price of the HK, POF, SN, LWRC...I would throw all those in the mud for an OBR. Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
My son put a Sage EBR stock on his M1A. Not more than 10 months later, he put the original stock back on, and modded it with a Karstens cheek rest like mine. The EBR stock works as advertised, but it had drawbacks too. One is that it takes a wonderful stock with no sharp edges and turns it into beast which pinches, scratches, pokes, and cuts you at every opportunity. The other flaw is that it makes an already heavy rifle noticeably heavier.
I think there are probably better choices of M1A/M14 stocks for general purpose use.

Have any insight of the Sage vs the Troy? The Annoyed Man wrote:My son put a Sage EBR stock on his M1A. Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
I did not have a good experience with my AR-type 308 (Rock River LAR-8). Shot great but was a temperamental jamming queen. If you do go with a 30-cal AR, I strongly recommend an Armalite. From my reading (due to all the issues I had with mine) they seem to be the least troublesome and represent the best bang for the buck.
Cheers!

Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
I went ahead with the Colt LE6940. I will be most handy in case the Zombie Outbreak Response Team at my house gets activated I wont be the only one armed with a battle rifle. I already had the "basic accessories" to outfit a 2nd AR. I will pick it up this weekend.
I will post a review as soon as I can, Colt LE 6940 vs S&W M&P15T.
AR10 is next most desired acquistion but I think I need to research them a little more before I spend the big money on a 1000 yd rifle . Also, it my help to learn to shoot at those distances with my Model 700 7mm first and decide what I need.
I think I will get an Arsenal SGL21-66 AK next though. At $800 its pricey but affordable no brainer and from what Ive seen from nutnfancy pretty accurate for an AK (~3 MOA @100 yds if I recall). (My WASR is so inaccurate that its almost unusable @100yds, Minute of Very large Man or small refridgerator)

Re: Priority: 2nd AR15 or AR10
I recently purchased a brand new Arsenal SGL21-73. Couldn't be happier.
I added a Hogue grip (highly recommended) and a VTAC sling. Other than needing to zero the front sight (buy an AK/SKS sight tool if you don't already have one), it was good to go.

Sounds like a good choice.
