My wife has the remington 870 express 20 gauge youth version or the gun. She love it and handles it very well. She is about 5'4" and only about 125 pounds. Maybe something to consider.

My 2 cents... I'd first try a 12ga, with a stock w/recoil-pad, sling, low-recoil buck and if you can swing it, a light. That pistol-grip can be killer on someone without the strength to handle it. 20ga with buckshot should also do the job if the 12ga is really too much. You can also get slug/field barrels for the Mossbergs/Remingtons etc. for additional hunting flexibility/resale value. You and your wife need to practice with the gun, consider how it might be used, learn to reload with your head on a swivel, all while keeping the gun shouldered and on target. If the BG gets up again or another makes an appearance, repeat. Don't "hope" but instead have a plan...

I try to get out at least once every month or two with the kiddos to the local outdoor range. We shoot trap/rifle/pistol, but I sure am glad they prefer shooting .22's. After a 2-3 hours of range time they're grinning ear to ear, have sore hands/arms and are ready for lunch.
I really like knowing that my kids can handle firearms safely, not to mention they know how to field-strip and clean most of the guns we shoot. :woohoo

When yours are ready to go, take a camera. Good memories for all and to share with the family.

Was it just the pistol grip or was there a stock as well?

The 12 was pistol grip only.

That's what I did with mine. Magnum 3" slugs feel like heavy-ish birdshot loads and it eliminates muzzle rise entirely. The difference it makes is truly amazing. Here's mine:

It's also collapsible, so can be adjusted for smaller persons.

Here's a video I did a while back after I put the Knoxx on it. Note the lack of muzzle rise. This results in much faster followup shots and transitions because you don't have to bring the sights back down to the target.
