M4: long distance shooting

#1

Post by travclem »

What a blast! My dad and I went to the range on saturday with our M4s and handguns. We wanted to see how the ARs would do at longer ranges so we started at 420yds shooting at a torso gong. It was amazing I just put the Eotech dot right on the Center of the gong and Boom.... Ping! we were hitting it pretty consistantly at this distance.

Dad wanted to see what his Glock 22 would do at 420yds and he hit the gong 3 times out of 16 rounds I was totally amazed. He wasn't elevating hardly at all, maybe 3-4 feet. I pulled out my 23c and tried but I was having to elevate about 30 feet to make it out there, but I never hit the gong. We later decided the elevation differences was ammo, he was shooting Speer Lawman and I was shooting Blazer.

After that we moved to 500yds and shot at the gongs some more with our rifles. this distance required about a foot of elevation, but the hits were still consistant. I wanted to move further back but we ran short on time. I can't wait to get back out there. It beat the hell out of shooting paper at 50yds.

Oh yeah his rifle ammo was American Eagle and mine was the Monarch steel cased from Academy.

That sounds like a blast. I didn't know they were that accurate from that range.

When firing M-4s at Ft Jackson we were doing 300 meters as part of the course. It is a good weapon.

Dietz (sounds like "Deets") Range in the New Braunfels area, if I recall correctly has an 800 yard lane...And they let you shoot big stuff there...Like your Barretts and McMillan .50's...

I have not been there in a few years, but that about all I can remember...

Before you go goofing around with elevation doing stuff like 'I think I needed a 30 ft holdover with my rifle or pistol', please sure that you know what's sitting, standing or walking 1600 meters behind your target.

At 1000 yd club rifle matches it's not unusual to see open sight shooters outscore folks with optics. At these same matches if you're not on paper within about 6 shots they may ask you to stand down.
it's socially unacceptable to be ahead of your time.

Ira, you are quite right as far as numbers - iron sight shooters often outscore F-Class - but remember that the rings are smaller on the F-Class target. The aiming black is the same diameter, but the rings are a lot tighter - half scale.

The 1,000 yard F-Class 10 ring is 10 inches in diameter - one minute of angle. The 1,000 yard iron-sight 10 ring is 20 inches - two minutes. Not that I can hit either of them.

Still, at 300 and 600, one can print 10s even if one's eyes are pretty poor. Focus on the front sight, let the target blur, break the shot and it is a 10.

BTW the new iron-sight 600 yard Range Record at Bayou Rifles was set 05/18/09 - it is 600-33x, set with a Match Rifle with globe sights.

What's your zero on that Eotech? I've got one on my M4gery, and it gives me a ton of confidence, but I've never actually fired it outside of a tactical bay yet. You have to have 3X magnification to use the 100 yard rifle range where I usually shoot (Elm Fork), and I haven't been able to buy a magnifier yet for my Eotech, which has a 25/250 yard zero using 55 grain M193 ammo. The rifle will overlap the first 3-4 rounds out of a cold bore, but at only 25 yards, I really have no idea if that actually translates to sub MOA in practical application at distances of 100 yards or more. My guess is that probably it doesn't.

I sighted mine in at 25/250 also and I don't have a magnifier either.

I skipped the Red Dots completely... went straight to a Bushnell Scope.

When we were at the 25 yard range there was a guy sitting next to us shooting with an Eotech... needless to say he was amazed at how much more accurate my wife was shooting.

Nw I just need to find time and get out to a 100+ yard Facility.

Interesting, I shoot MOA at 100yds with my eotech and can stack shots ontop of each other at 25yds. Eotechs are very accurate but they have to be turned down for the center do to be 1 true MOA if they are turned up the dot will be bigger.

I think my major issue was the fact I wasn't using an Eotech Red Dot.... :cryin

It's alright... I am happy as a goose with the Bushnell 4-12 I have.
