Can you elaborate?... I've had an 88 for a while and although it doesn't go to the range much, I don't consider it the way you do.

It would go "click" no bang - - - pump the action "bang" - - - pump the action "bang" - - - Pump the action "bang" - - - Pump the action "click" etc. :eek6

The ejected live shells had not been hit by the firing pin and would fire when put back into the gun, unless it went "click" again. :confused5

I had a 'Smith look at it he found a rough spot in the firing pin channel and fixed that but, it still wasn't reliable. :banghead:

When I have no confidence in a gun I get rid of it. I traded it and $50 for a 500 and haven't looked back. :woohoo

I also own a Maveric, and like it very much. All Mossburg barrels will fit it. So it's not only a cheaper choice, but can be set up for HD, or hunting.

We used Mossberg 500's on the ships during Security Alert drills many years ago. I have one here with the interchangeable barrel and stock. Great gun, but my recommendation is to change the safety slide out from the civilian (plastic) version to the steel (military) version. The trigger assembly on the civilian model is polymer as well, and you can get steel trigger assemblies if you want, but the civilian version trigger assembly works just fine. The reason I recommend changing out the safety slide is that if the little ball/spring get gummed up underneath and you have to remove it to clean, you will most likely crack the plastic one when reinstalled. This eliminates that concern. Parts are inexpensive and readily available. Barrels and stocks interchange easily. Mine has the bird barrel and the 20", the standard wood stock and the pistol grip. Will handle 2 3/4" and 3" shell with no problem. Guess which configuration is my preference for home defense? :txflag:

Enjoy!

This is my Remington 1100, Custom Home Defense Edition
It started life as a normal 1100. I replaced the Stock, the barrel (18" smooth bore buck w/ rem-choke, full choke), added a mag extention, side saddle carrier, 'tacticool ' enlarged bolt handle, and a coleman flashlight (it does 3 colors! White, red and blue!)
I feed it exclusively 00 buck.

It's been as reliable as a rock to me. Never once had any problems, but I take good care of her.

.. If the old assault weapons ban was still in place... it would be classified as one under it! (Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds + Pistol Grip)
That right there makes me "rlol"

Question:

One of Mossburg's big marketing plugs is that its models were the only shotguns to pass some US Military endurance test. I'd always heard the model that passed the test was the 590. But then others have claimed it was the 500. From what I can tell from looking and talking to a few folks, the main difference between the two is some polymer parts in the trigger assembly, safety and other areas on the 500 that are all metal on the 590. Other than that, same gun, right?

So which gun actually passed the endurance test? And is there any other major difference between 500 and 590?

Those are pretty much the only differences from what I gather. When running security alerts inside the ship, I preferred to have the Mossberg and a .45 (showing my age there, aren't I?) Sometimes they insisted that I take an M-14 instead. Pretty useless inside the passageways and compartments of a ship. I guarantee that I could clear a room quickly with a shotgun. Nice and short, easily maneuvered in tight areas and quick to use. No worries about penetration with steel bulkheads, but ricochets could be a problem. Just open the hatch a few inches and stick the barrel in, though, and ricochets were going to be more of a problem for the bad guys than the good guys. Big time. Topside, I preferred the M-14A1, full auto option. Hide up on top of a crane on a steel deckplate and I could take out anyone I saw. Had the .45 for back up. Or sit up there with an M-60.

Those were the days...... :patriot:

I like my Mossberg. Safety readily accessible, easy operation, reliable. Nothing fancy, just good gun. Paid less than $200 for mine, with two barrels and two stocks, used. My teenage boys are aching to take it to the country and do a little plinking with it. I'll start them off with some lighter bird loads and see how that goes, after the safety lecture, of course. When it comes to gun safety, they know that if they don't pay absolute attention and follow the letter of everything I tell them, that will be the last time they shoot for a VERY long time. They best they ever behave is at the range. I have to blink my eyes and make sure I brought the right kids with me. :rolll

Good luck to all, and be safe!

I have an 18" 870 with the 6-round magazine, and am quite happy with it. I ended up outfitting it with the Knoxx SpecOps rear stock and have found it to be probably the best gun accessory purchase I have ever made. It makes 3" magnum slugs feel like heavy bird loads... it's absolutely amazing. I hear that you can actually buy them in this configuration, but I did mine aftermarket.

This is the model I purchased:

Here's the SpecOps:

I found that the SpecOps stock puts my cheek at the absolute perfect spot for sighting with the bead. Like I said, best gun accessory purchase I have ever made.

And here she is:

I also bought the "PowerPak" shell holder for it, which is made specifically for the SpecOps. It also includes a "high" cheekrest in case you mounted rifle sights or optics on your shotgun:

I just yesterday bought a Remington 870 Express Tactical.

http://www.remington.com/products/firea ... ctical.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Image

I bought the model #81198. It has the rail, rear ghost ring and XS front sight. It is NOT however tritium filled which can be a bit misleading since everyone knows XS as the big dot tritium sights. I am currently trying to find out if they offer a tritium replacement for it. Buds Guns Shop has the best price but I had a $30 off coupon plus a $150 cash card for Cabelas so I bought mine from them. All said and done, $380 out the door for the gun, 5 boxes of ammo, and a 6 shell receiver mounted shell carrier.

On Buds site, it can be a bit difficult to find it but just go to the regular search bar and type in Remington 81198 and it will come right up. As of yesterday, they had them in stock and the price was $409 delivered + your FFL transfer.

Now I'm just looking for accessories to mount a light and perhaps a laser on it.

Thanks!

They have plenty left. Although if I hadn't had those coupons I would have bought either at a gun show or from Buds.
