Need Help

#1

Post by WarHawk-AVG »

Ok, I have a dillema!

I need an AR

I finally got my M-1 Garand in from the CMP after I got rid of all my other guns to get out of debt

I am also joining the Texas State Guard and even though we aren't slated to carry M-4/AR-15 we need them...so no I have to get me an AR.

Can some of you guys help me figure out where to start, I'm really not an AR kinda guy...I hate having to start over trying to get ammo and a rifle.

Uggh...they weren't kidding when they said that it costs you money to be in the TXSG

Should I try to build one, or try to get a complete one

I know I need a flattop upper so I can put an aimpoint on it, but don't know if I need a front sight assembly or get one of those BUIS sights (I am really partial to irons...I learned on them...I shoot well with them..but dangit..that aimpoint just spoiled me rotten!)

Can anyone help?

P.S. I can almost guarantee NO free funds for a while because my company is about to go on strike, and I am still working on my "Dave Ramsey" stuff...getting there..but taking longer than I would have liked

Thanks

I'm in the same exact boat WarHawk-AVG. With this downturn in the economy and the price of everything going up, it's getting tough to stick with Dave, but I'm doing it! Baby Steps indeed!

I'm curious about the requirements for the AR with the TXSG. Is it just a "good to have" or do they strongly recommend someone getting one? I'm going to be joining as well and would love another viewpoint from someone else joining!

Thanks!

I asked my Company Commander and he told us pretty matter of factly that the AR platform is the preferred weapons platform (even though a rifle is not on the table of equipment)...everyone and I mean everyone in my unit (The Maritime Regiment) seems to have one but me [uggh!]

I haven't yet been sworn in but I am picking up here and there the jist of the operations and stuff...I do know that the TXSG isn't a "paramilitary" force..we are used as Emergency Response and Rescue..ah heck..here is the TXSG mission statement if anyone would like to know.
The Texas State Guard (TXSG) mission as a branch of the Texas Military Forces is to provide mission-ready military forces to assist State and local authorities in times of state emergencies, with homeland security and community service through Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA). To augment the other two branches of the Texas Military Forces, the Texas Army National Guard and Texas Air National Guard as force multipliers. Missions are directed by the Commander in Chief of the Texas Military Forces the Governor of Texas and commanded by the Texas Adjutant General.
I would say this..if you are interested all you have to do is put your contact them directly..after all I am a noob and am still learning the ropes...I can tell you this though...for a group of "non" active duty types [many are former military, police]...the guys in my unit are some of the most knowledgeable and professional sons of guns I have ever met...its an honor to stand with them in time of need!

If you want your AR right away you'll pay almost twice what they cost a year ago. You can save money if you look around and are willing to delay gratification.

What would Dave Ramsey say to do?

How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

I've seen a couple Doublestars come up at Buds gunshop on-line for under 9 bills - I want to say $850 or so. I bought one last fall and it came with a crappy wire-controlled flashlight, mounting bracket for the light, and a 3-pt Pic mount for $825. It shoots very well. I bought teh flat-top version with a detachable rear peep and straight out of the box (well...cleaned it & lubed it first) it was shooting playing cards at 25 yards, small paper plates ("cake" style) at 50, and full-size paper plates at 100.

Texas CHL received 07/24/09 and being used daily.

With an Aimpoint, you don't necessarily need a flip-up front BUIS. You can set up a co-witness with the front sight and then simply use a rear flip-up BUIS if needed. With a small spacer on the Aimpoint, the BUIS can be seen in the lower 1/3 of the sight's view.

Well I got a RRA complete lower from a buddy for $270

It has a 6 position collapsable stock and a single stage trigger

Gonna go to the gunshow this weekend...looking for a 16" mid-length A4 upper w/ 1:8 heavy barrel (would like the Wylde chamber too)

If not..might just have to piece one together
