The FN PBR is an affordable, accurate .308 and can be had with a 5 round detachable magazine.05kas05 wrote:thanks for all the info and replys as far as the 308 yes i would prefere a bolt action that holds 5 rounds or as close to that as possible maybe one that has a detachable magazine.i also would like a .22 with a magazine possibly a 10 rounder or more
i was thinking of a cheap one like a plinkster by mosseberg but have not heard good things so far,the same can be said about the 10/22 everyone says there great if you spend a butload of money on them.the .22 will be used mainly for squirels and rabbits and punching paper.i am looking at all the options you guys mentioned but if you can think of anything else it is appreciated

And you should expect to spend at least $300 on a scope. There's not many quality scopes available for less than that.

Re: 308 & 22 suggestions
I hunt with a Remington 700 VSF in .308 (mine is left-handed). It has a 26" fluted heavy barreled action on an HS Precision stock. It shoots sub MOA all day long, and is easily good out past 500 yards. I've shot heavy barreled Remington 700s in .308 out to 800 yards on a range, and they are great rifles. You could do a lot worse.
My son has a Savage 10FP HS Precision in .308, and it is a tack driver too, although it is noticeably heavier than my Remington. Both are fairly heavy rifles for hunting use, but either rifle would suit you well if you didn't mind humping the extra weight of a heavy barreled, accurate rifle around.
Keep in mind though that even a really great rifle isn't much good without quality optics, and you should factor that into the total amount you can afford to spend on the project.
But the inconvenient truth I've found since moving here to Texas is that A) it is very difficult to find ranges that are accessible to the public which go past 200 yards; and B) there aren't very many places in the state where you're going to take a hunting shot over about 300 yards for most game. Since that is the case more often than not, you might be able to save yourself a lot of money by buying a lighter barreled (and less expensive) "hunting" rifle as opposed to a heavier barreled (and more expensive) "target" rifle.

Re: 308 & 22 suggestions
well i went today and got a savage mark 2 with the accutriger i just liked the fact it was bolt action and had a nice feel to it .it was 159.00 +tax so i felt that it was a decent price.i went to the gun show in austin this morning and that was a waste of time although i did pick up a holster for my kahr pm40.i went to find a ruger lcp and a .22 but the lcp was 389.00+tax and that is a hundred more than the local shop so i ordered it from my local guy, yeah i will have to wait for it to come in but i got two guns for an extra fifty bucks compared to one at the gun show.
as far as my 308 goes im still looking at the guns suggested, and i need to save the money seeing as i just spent it all.
i did find a gun i am interested in and would like your opinions it is the savage scout rifle in .308 please look it over and let me know what you think.thanks again for all the help and suggestions it is truly appreciated
