Bought A New Deer Rifle
Well stinkin' Academy was having a sale this weekend, and while I am in no way in the market for a Deer Rifle, they had a cheap Remington 770 .243 on Sale with a Rebate as well, so I thought what the heck.
It's all Synthetic with a Stainless barrel, and came with a Bushnell 3x9 Scope. I've read a lot of nasty reviews on this rifle, and a lot of people are saying is bascially an aesthetically pleasing version of their old, failed 710. For what I'll be using this for (Target Practice, maybe an occasional deer/hog hunt) I think it'll be fine for me. I'm not a die-hard hunter and this thing looks like it can take a beating, so it will be nice for the farm. It has built-in swivel studs that are molded into the plastic. Does anyone know if a Harris bipod will fit onto these? I'd like to get it Camp-Dipped as well. Anyone have a good source for that?

I thought you were going deer hunting. The .243 is a varmint caliber. Real Texas hunters must have a belted magnum. If you don't have a bruise after a box of shells you don't have enough gun.

.243 a varmit cal.? Hmm thats a new one! I've been hunting with the same Remington 7600 in .243 in Duval county for 20 years, and have brought in my lions share of deer!anygunanywhere wrote:I thought you were going deer hunting. I'll be down there at the end of November to reverify that my .243 is a deer killer.
If you shoot it long enough, it will leave a bruise on your shoulder!

Re: Bought A New Deer Rifle
I have a Winchester Pre-64 Mod 70 in .243 that I used to hunt with. It is a safe queen now.
I used to use a Mossberg Mod 810 heavy barrel in 7mm Rem Mag. It is a reliable backup.
My current deer rifles are a Savage Mod 10 in 300 WSM with the Accutrigger (love it) and a Winchester Mod 70 Super Shadow in 300 WSM.
Now if I can get some time off from work and get to the field........

Here's a pic. I stopped by Academy tonight and picked up a Coldwell Bipod and a Sling. I like how it looks, I just hope it shoots decent!

Re: Bought A New Deer Rifle
I was looking at the same rifle in .270. How do you like it? The one I handled felt kinda... well, cheap and I couldn't pull the trigger on the purchase.
I don 't know about the rest of you guys but where I hunt a .243 is just right if not near overkill...
Every deer I have taken has been with a .243.

You're right, it's got a "feel" that weighs toward the cheap side. I'm pretty sure Remington designed it as an Entry-Level model for people exactly like me, i.e. would like to hunt occasionally and likes to shoot at the range.kd5zex wrote:I was looking at the same rifle in .270. I've since worked the action a few times and oiled up the bolt nicely, and it's not as sticky anymore. I got what I paid for, and I'm ok with that.
