The only good snake...the only good shotgun

#1

Post by TexasTornado »

So there was a snake in our garage tonight that tried to kill a poor little frog as we were leaving. My dad being the awesome manly tough guy that he is freed the poor little frog and got the snake around the side of the garage against the house.

(Three cheers for dad) :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

In comes the shotgun...

My dad had rotator cuff surgery less than a year ago so the shotgun was out of the question for him. Historically I don't like sacrificing my shoulder being bruised for 3 days, but when it comes to an evil vicious frog murderous snake....you better believe I'm shooting it.

One shot, one dead snake! :fire

Long story short I LOVE my dad's new semi automatic 12g shotgun. Nothing like the old pump action that made me swear off shotguns entirely. Nope, now I'm officially a shotgun fan....and dad is probably going to be one shotgun short in his collection....he just doesn't know it yet.

Snakes, like Fire Ants and democrats, are God's creatures. Why did you kill what kind of snake.

I'm not sure what kind it was, but not about to chance one of us or one of my dogs getting bit. It tried to kill a poor little frog and found out it wasn't the biggest predator around, simple as that.

Just a little food for thought, snakes keep the vermin in check.

The dogs do too....yuck. But 5.5 acres, I'm sure there are plenty of slitheries out there. Just don't come into my house/garage. Same with spiders or BEgs for that matter. I have my territory they have there's. Just living by animal kingdom rules, you invade my territory you end up like Mr snake.

I don't blame you when they're that close to the house. I've just lost count of how many times people have eradicated all the snakes on their properties then put out rat poison to kill the vermin and end up poisoning their pets. I'm not trying to lecture you but some types of snakes are actually beneficial to have around. I kill any venomous ones I come across.

Your tale about the shotgun reminded me of a trip to the range a couple of years ago to test my Mossberg 930SPX (18.5 in semi-auto) with some new ammo.

There was a young couple that had just moved here from Kalifornia. They were out exercising their new-found freedom and new pistol, so I asked them if they would like to shoot my 12ga shotgun.

He was like  . She was like  . I assured her I would show her how to shoot it correctly and promised she wouldn't wind up like those girls on YouTube.

After a bit of instruction, he shot a couple of rounds and had a big grin on his face. The girl, who was a tiny little thing & looked like she weighed about a buck-nuthin, was nervous but willing. After the first shot, she looked at me with big eyes and a half-grin. When I asked, she confirmed it was not bad at all. With that she leaned into it and finished her turn. As they walked away, she told the guy, "That's our next gun!"

You know I think you are awesome, but, I have to disagree with both your assessment of snakes, and pump shotguns. :nono:

Snakes eat frogs, that's their nature. If you were able to save the frog then the snake was non venomous. Snakes will do more to prevent mice and rats in your house than a whole clouder of cats.( yes that is what a large group is called)
I have only killed one snake around my house, a copperhead that had bitten my dog for the second time in two weeks.
Mrs. Jusme has the same, attitude as you about snakes as demonstrated by my posts in this thread. http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic. ... ilit=Snake

Now for pump shotguns, I taught my daughter and her best friend how to shoot one, and that's what my daughter keeps in her house for HD. My daughter is 5ft 3 her friend is 4ft 11. I started them with bird shot and worked up to 3" magnum 00 buck. This was a Mossberg 500 with an 18.5" barrel. It is all in proper shouldering and stance. My wife is also very proficient with it. For reference I am 5'-8" 165 lbs. I can empty a full magazine (6 rounds) in under 8 seconds.
Please think about relocating snakes rather than killing them, they mean you no harm, and only go where they have a food source. JMHO

So, just what name brand and model of semi automatic 12 g shotgun did dear old dad purchase? I'm in the market for a new semi auto and would be interested in the particulars of your dad's gun.

Thanks,
Joe

No. 9 shot is great for rattlers in either .410 or 12 gauge. I leave the coachwhips and bullsnakes alone--they are non-venomous and beneficial snakes.

Check out the Taurus Long Judge as a good snake gun around the house. It shoots 5 rounds of .410--that way if you miss the first time there are 4 more behind it.
Please know and follow the rules of firearms safety.

You are living in their territory !
TO me that just disrupts nature and hate when people do things like that .

Here's a question....how many of ya'll defending the snakes have ever shot a deer or a dove? These are also God's creatures and pose almost no potential risk to you, your family, or your pets....

I'm not a snake expert. Frankly not getting close enough to them to analyze if they are poisonous or not. If they are in the fields, they can stay there. Had the frog not been hopping out of my garage, the snake could have very easily struck my ankle instead.

I have zero regrets here guys. Zero.
