An acquaintance took his own life last week.

I attributed it to the quarantine since he lost his high paying service job of 15 years, just before.

Two family members are mental health professionals who say they're seeing a marked increase in attempted sucides in the under 21 age group. Of course, they don't see the ones successful attempts so don't have data on number of deaths. The rise in depression associated with lockdown if very real.

The rise in depression today can be attributed to the fear-based media model: Scary news stories lure in eyeballs and people become addicted to this fear. Scaring the public equals more revenue. A common example is hurricane season; the moment a tropical wave forms off the coast of Africa we're told it could develop into a major storm and might be headed this way, so stay tuned.
Psychology Today wrote an excellent anaylsis of the fear-based business model of modern media. Mental health professionals say an immediate treatment for depression is to limit consumption of news to once or twice a day, not so easy for addicted news junkies.
