The devil went down to Georgia, and rockin' Country Music Hall of Fame icon Charlie Daniels has died. He passed away today, at 83 from a stroke, in a hospital in Hermitage, Tennessee. Controversy surrounded some of his lyrics--he became a little more politically correct as he got older--but his firebrand style, and particularly that signature 1979 "Devil Went Down to Georgia," I think helped usher in an era that crossed Bluegrass and Grand Ol' Opry with the 70s/80s hard and anthem rock, making a new hybrid of country music accessible to those who didn't care much for the pure Bluegrass roots.
RIP, Charlie.
