Liquids have a vapor pressure so the gas they give off [vapor] can be detected.
There are also instruments that will detect gases given off by explosives and other organic compounds.
When analyzing low levels of compounds false positives can be common.
My sister worked for a company in Silicon Valley that developed these types of instruments for rapidly screening packages such as luggage at an airport.
Knowing the personality of the FB CEO, I would think that they have the best instruments available.

Zuckerberg spies on over a billion people, and his company has abused—more than once—the trust people put in his product. How paranoid do you think that makes him feel? I have the Facebook app on my iPad, but I refuse to put it on my phone, exactly because I don’t want facebook to follow me around, and listen to my private offline conversations..
