The Republic of Texas officially approved the iconic red, white and blue Lone Star flag on this day 180 years ago.

The simple flag – a vertical blue stripe one-third the width of the flag with a white star and two horizontal stripes of white over red – was approved by Texas President Mirabeau Lamar on January 25, 1839.

The first flag of Texas was actually a solid medium blue with a single gold star in the center. It didn't even last three years. The flag Texans know was created in 1838 and approved by the Texas Congress in early 1839 before being officially designated the flag by President Lamar.

A State House resolution from 1997 says Dr. Charles B. Stewart of Montgomery County created the iconic flag and Montgomery County, in the Houston area, is officially designated as the birthplace of the Lone Star flag

President Burnet proposed the Burnet Flag (azure background with single gold star) as the first official National Flag, as well as second flag for naval service. The naval (or war) ensign was similar to US Flag but with a single star on the blue canton. Both were ultimately adopted by the Texas Congress and signed into law on 10 Dec 1836 by President Houston. They served until the Lone Star Flag was adopted on 25 Jan 1839.

It appears that a lot of Texans during that period never realized that the Burnet Flag was the official National Flag, and instead used the Naval Ensign as the flag of the Republic of Texas. That is the flag I have in my avatar.

Would that put us 7 flags over Texas instead of the traditional 6 ?

Texas has the best state flag.

Bold, powerful, graphically awesome.

And the fact that you can find the flag inside the US flag is just a bonus.

No, the Burnet Flag, the naval service flag, and the Lone Star Flag were flags of the same political entity, the Republic of Texas.

The Six Flags over Texas refer the six different political entities or sovereigns that have ruled over Texas territory: Spain, France Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, and Confederate States.

Yes, the six flags refer to the six sovereigns of Texas.

If we want to get technical, the timeline is Spain, France, Spain, Republic of Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, Confederate States, and finally the United States again.

Sigh. Everybody forgets the Republic of the Rio Grande.
