Bad SMU Bad

I thought about putting this in the political forum, but ended up here. Anyway, ...

Some of you may remember that one of the five officers murdered here in Dallas on July 7th was a friend of mine as is his widow and both daughters. Their older daughter and mine attended school together from K-8 and played sports together and I've coached them for several years in those sports. Our daughters are now in their freshman year in high school and don't get to see each other as much because they are in two different schools. His daughter plays volleyball and in order to honor her dad, SMU wanted to have her serve an honorary first serve at one of their upcoming games. Her mom received the following e-mail today.
I regret to inform you that we will not be able to go through with the honorary first serve. In the switch between staff members and the handling of volleyball promotions, some information was not forwarded on correctly from (name omitted) to myself and I deeply apologize for that.
The volleyball program was not correctly informed that this would be taking place at the game, and feels that in light of recent events and diversity within the SMU community, that the demonstration could be deemed insensitive.

However, the coaching staff would like to still do something for Victoria and the team. They are invited to stay after the game for an autograph session with the players, if you would like.

Again, they apologize for the inconvenience and late notice, especially in regards to the sensitivity of this matter.
I do hope that you all will still join us on Saturday. If you would like to discuss this further, you can reach me at
His daughter had hoped to go to SMU, but doesn't know now. She's very upset.

It's up to her, but I wouldn't set foot on that campus. As a Methodist this is a slap in the face. How can the daughter of a slain police police officer, serving a volleyball, be insensitive?

This is an insult! Not just to your friend's daughter, but to every LEO who puts on a uniform. This needs to be made public and the sender of the email made to defend the school's position on this.

"....diversity within the SMU community....", what does that mean? FWIW, the official written position of the United Methodist Church is strongly anti gun.

Religious institutions/facilities are places that I do not have to go. If my gun isn't welcome, neither am I.

This needs to go viral. I don't have any social media accounts so all you who do post this. This is completely ridiculous.

My mother's entire family is deeply rooted in the Methodist Church- my fore fathers were Methodist preachers before the Methodist and United Brethren churches merged to form the United Methodist Church. I was christened, raised in, married in and active in the UMC. Then liberalism began seeping into church doctrine. To borrow a quote from Reagan - I didn't leave the UMC, it left me.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that the daughter of the slain officer was treated this way - liberals are without a doubt the most hateful and hurtful people in America these days.

I dont know how they can look themselves in the mirror. Shameful and disgraceful. I agree with the above. I dont do FB or any other social sites but maybe someone else can get this into the public eyes. All it takes is that 1 small spark to get it going and this is certainly a good cause. My condolences to the friends and family of the fallen officer.

Hence, the rise in the charismatic; e.g., Cowboy Churches, et al, and the decline in the attendance in the established denominational groups.

I and several of my friends on FB have shared it. I don't do twitter, but several of our friends that are also friends of their family do and they have blasted it out there on twitter. FB and this forum are the only two types of social media that I participate in. Well, there are a couple other forums I poke around a little in, but probably don't have a combined post total of 100 in them.
